With QB Peter Zamora gone after graduation, the Westside head coach just wasn’t sure who he’d have behind center. Enter Cutter Woods Cutter Woods 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Westside | 2025 State SC , a talented sophomore transfer with a big arm and a handful of offers already.
Woods’ family moved into the area, and the Rams’ QB situation improved dramatically.
“We got lucky,” Earley said. “From Day One, Cutter came in and won the locker room. He’s the first one in and the last one out. He’s a phenomenal human being. He’s a leader. And boy, can he spin it. He can flat play. We feel blessed to have him.”
The Rams are pretty blessed across the board on the offensive side of the ball. Woods’ main targets are expected to include Jimmar Boston Jimmar Boston 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Westside | 2024 State SC , who had more than 600 receiving yards and eight TDs a year ago.
“He’s got track speed, he’s a leaper, and he does a great job of going up and high-pointing the football,” Earley said. “He’s got everything you’re looking for.”
Josh Williams Josh Williams 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Westside | 2024 State SC is expected to play opposite Boston, with Jameson Wilson Jameson Wilson 5'11" | 185 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC at one slot receiver position. Dee Robertson Dee Robertson 5'6" | 150 lbs | ATH Westside | 2024 State SC will slide out of the backfield to the other slot.
Up front, Earley calls the offensive line “maybe the best five we’ve had.” The group includes Jeremie Brown, Justin Williford, Dylon Gray, and Nick Hatten.
Who’s going to run it for the Rams?
“Same guy who’s been running it,” Earley said with a chuckle.
That would be Hunter Puckett Hunter Puckett 6'3" | 240 lbs | ATH Westside | 2023 State SC . At 6-3 and 235, Puckett has the size to demolish defenders at the end of runs – when they can match his speed. He rushed for 6.7 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns last season.
Earley has attempted to use the versatile, athletic Puckett at other areas of need.
“We tried to get him to play some defense,” Earley said. “He grew up playing everything. But all he wants to do is run the ball, and fortunately for us that’s something he’s really good at.”
On the defensive side, the Rams are young. There are a few returners, though, including AJ Williams at DL. Williams had 68 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks last season.
“He’s a wrestler who advanced to the state championships, and he’s pound-for-pound probably our strongest player,” Earley said.
Titus Crisler returns at LB, with KD McGowan back in the secondary for the Rams. Boston, Robertson, Williams, and others will play both ways for Westside.
Earley said if the team stays healthy, the season can be special.
“For us to get through the schedule we play, we’ve got to stay clean,” Earley said. “If we can do that, we might have a chance to get a ways down the road.”
