We will dive into a few things. 1) How each of these drills come into play when we evaluate the tape. 2) who made some significant strides with their size/speed ratio. and 3) Who had the top five offensive skill positions testing numbers last Saturday & what are some key notes from some of these positions we noticed?
Tests to Tape Examples40-yard dash: The 40 really tests the burst a prospect has from start to finish. Think of a running back with a straight path to the end zone, does he have the ability from start to finish to completely finish his runs for a touchdown? We hope to see prospects that are finishing strong at the end of their 40 while evaluating the talent in the Dome. Those are the kids I would be recruiting at the next level. Hopefully soon, we can add 10 and 20 yard testing to really grasp where their strongest speed starts.
Shuttle: The shuttle really shows off the shake in the hips from side to side. Let us talk wide receivers now. Let’s look at a WR around the edges with the secondary right in front of him. Can he be agile and move his hips to the right or left with sound balance to get yards after the catch? This is where the shuttle comes into play while evaluating.
Broad Jump: The best example I can think of while evaluating goes back to the running back position. A running back needs to have a developed lower body to drive their feet efficiently thru contact. The broad jump number shows me just how much explosiveness a RB has in their hips to power thru that contact.
The L-Drill: Wide Receivers come to mind when evaluating this position as an example. When the play breaks down, and the wideout has to recreate their route, they have to usually work in a small window of space to get enough separation to get open, this is where the L-Drill comes into play because of having to change multiple directions and having to stride just hard enough to make that big-time catch possible in sometimes limited space while the QB is probably getting some pressure.
Quarterbacks:Five Fastest 40’s
-What comes interesting into play with this Top 5, is four of the five QBs were First Team All-Camp Team. We got our eyes on their skillsets in mostly 1v1s, but these fellas have some speed to use to get out of the pocket quickly and get the throw out.
Five Fastest Shuttles
-A name to know in the Class of 2025 is Brayden Simones of Sartell. I got a chance to watch Brayden’s brother, Dylan SimonesDylanSimones
5'10" | 140 lbs | WR Sartell | 2023MN last summer in Sartell and was very impressed with his athleticism from top to bottom at wide receiver for the Sabres. Since Brayden ended up in the top 5 for shuttles, I am going to assume Brayden doesn’t far from Simones family free of that same athleticism we saw in the 320 last summer during summer camp.
Five Best Jumpers (Broad Jump)
-Four out of the five best jumpers from the QB position are underclassmen on this list which is a awesome site to see for the future.
Running Backs:
-Are you telling me the fastest running backs at the Prep Redzone Minnesota Showcase all hail from the Outstate? As an Outstater myself, you love to see that burst growing out here! All five prospects hail from outside the Twin Cities Metro which goes down as the most interest testing list of the day.
Five Fastest 40s
Five Fastest Shuttles
-We are finding out very early that RB Jack Grimsley (2024) of Mayer Lutheran is a prospect I need to watch live out here in the Outstate where I live. He dominated the shuttle and an upcoming drill we will mention later.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends:Five Fastest 40s
-The most impressive take from this group on the 40 yard dash? It was won by a tight end by the name of Jack TorborgJackTorborg
6'5" | 220 lbs | TE Spring Lake Park | 2023MNof Spring Lake Park. Not just because Jack is a TE, but Jack comes in first in the 40 yard dash plus came into our showcase at nearly 6’5 220, which puts him at the top number of our size/speed ratio we like to see from potential college prospects like Jack.
Five Fastest Shuttles
It is no wonder Danny McGrath was my favorite route-runner of the day. This kid showed me what I mentioned above that being able to flip your hips side to side is important mix to your route-running ability.
Five Fastest L-Drills
The biggest surprise from the WR L-Drill came from Cole ThompsonColeThompson
6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Minnesota Valley Lutheran | 2023MNof Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Cole was the bright spot of the MVL Chargers in the game I watched in the 2021 playoffs. This young man showed a solid route-running ability and was able to make some significant plays against the rowdy Pipestone Arrows secondary. Cole will be the biggest returning piece to the Chargers next year and is a prospect to watch out from New Ulm.
