If you look at any class in any state, you can see the top 10-20 athletes and quickly find why they stand above the rest. Michigan is no exception, as our soon to be updated top 5 athletes are simply on another level. In this article, I'll be going over the new top 5 in the class of 2023, and I'll be discussing what makes them stand out.
#1 QB [player_tooltip player_id="30316" first="Dante" last="Moore"] - Detroit MLK
It’s entertaining and exciting to see all these colleges fight over [player_tooltip player_id="30316" first="Dante" last="Moore"]. But let me tell you, he deserves all the attention. Before High School, Moore led the Detroit Spartans to three United Youth Football League National Championships. He then received his first offer from the University of Michigan from coach Harbaugh during a Michigan camp before playing a single snap in High School. During his freshman season at just 14 years old, Moore had been waking up at 5:00 AM to partake in workouts with former Michigan QB Devin Gardner, and he won a QB competition against a senior. That freshman season, he and King defeated Birmingham Seaholm in the State Semifinals, then lost to Mona Shores in the championship.
His story is more well-known past his freshman season; this past year, he led his team to a State Championship victory in a thrilling game vs. DeWitt. [player_tooltip player_id= "30316" first= "Dante" last= "Moore"] is one of the premier High School athletes in the country, and I can't wait to see how far Moore goes both in Football and in Life.
#2 DL [player_tooltip player_id="162650" first="Jalen" last="Thompson"] - Cass Tech
Very physically gifted with a great work ethic, [player_tooltip player_id= "162650" first= "Jalen" last= "Thompson"] has consistently outperformed the top competition, making him rise to the top of the 2023 rankings. I couldn't find much in terms of media coverage from 2019 to 2020, but it seems that he started gaining attention during the 2020 season after a stellar performance against Detroit MLK. This is a great athlete on one of the blue blood programs in Michigan.
#3 OL [player_tooltip player_id="30317" first="Johnathan" last="Slack"] - Detroit MLK
The 3x All-State offensive lineman has been a household name for quite some time. Being the supreme defender of [player_tooltip player_id="30316" first="Dante" last="Moore"] is quite the role to have, and Slack is incredible at it. A few linemen come close, but all in all, nobody has the ability of Slack. He's headed to Michigan State following the 2022 season.
#4 OL [player_tooltip player_id="30318" first="Amir" last="Herring"] - West Bloomfield
It's a close race between Herring and Slack, and in all honesty, they're neck-and-neck. He's another beast on the line with insanely good footwork and power. What stands out for Herring is his play against top competition and his overall physical awe.
#5 RB [player_tooltip player_id="162655" first="Cole" last="Cabana"] - Dexter
Cabana is an electrifying athlete I cannot wait to see in the Maize and Blue. His speed is incredible, with a 4.34 40-yard dash + being a 2x All-American Sprinter. The athletic ability of Cabana is outstanding, and this is exactly what makes him stand out against the rest. Cabana is indeed top 3 in players I'd love to watch this coming season!
