This tournament is once a year in Houston, Texas hosted by Clay Mack Skillz an athletic movement specialist / NFL Dback trainer, and Coach Gordon Lavalius. They put together an awesome event that showcases what 7v7 football is all about. Which are good off-season competitions and getting kids recruited. Below is a list of Athletes that I would like to spotlight that dominated on both sides of the football during the weekend.
1. Saboor Karriem Saboor Karriem 6'4" | 180 lbs | DB West Orange | 2023 State NJ 6’3″ 170 lbs Class of 2023 West Orange HS / Team ASG 7v7
Saboor is an opponent’s quarterback & wide receiver’s worst nightmares on defense but a quarterback’s best friend and weapon if they are on the same team. Karriem made it scary for a quarterback to look to his side and throw. Karriem is 6’3″ 170 lbs with an athletic body. Karriem primarily lined up outside against the competition’s best receiver. If the opponent didn’t put their best receiver to his side it was inevitably a whole half of the field shut down with no chance of throwing to his side. Karriem shows fluidity in his backpedal and when having to break on passes. Karriem does a good job moving his feet, driving on the ball, and being technique sound in coverage. Karriem has good pass deflection skills to match his good footwork. When Karriem lined up on offense it was no different. Karriem became an immediate threat to the defending defense. I liked how Karriem would leave defense then come to offense and can run any route needed to help his team. Karriem has very good hands. When Karriem catches the football he can snatch it out of the air either with one hand or two.
2. Jarvis Jones 6’3″ 170 lbs Class of 2023 West Orange HS / Team ASG 7v7
Jarvis is Jones is the other 1/2 of this dynamic duo that West Orange HS and Team ASG 7v7 both have. Saboor Karriem Saboor Karriem 6'4" | 180 lbs | DB West Orange | 2023 State NJ and Jarvis Jones both play for the same HS team and 7v7 Team. But let us talk about Jones and what he brings to the field. What immediately stood out was the speed Jones posses. He is a vertical threat every play. Whether Jones is lined up in the slot or outside the defense better have someone reroute and slow him down because once he gets running there is no slowing him down. Jones shows the ability to make tough catches whether its in traffic or 50/50 ball in the air. Jones has strong hands with long arms that allow whatever quarterback is throwing him the ball to place the ball up high to only where Jones can catch. Jones on defense was dominant. Jones in his Jr season highlight tape lined up mainly at cornerback but during his time at the tournament, it was exciting to see him line up inside and play a nickel defensive back type role. Jones showed off his versatility at 6’3″ that he has the fluid hips to guard some of those tougher routes and speedy guys who like to run whips routes, speed outs, and slants. Jones did all of this without the help of a sideline as an extra defender which tells me his cover skills are legit.
3. Willie A. Tucker 5’10″ 165 lbs Class of 2022 Mountain Pointe HS / Team 24 7v7
Willis a Tucker is the next ATH I would like to spotlight. Tucker Is Fast and speed is nothing that Tucker is lacking. Paired with his quickness Tucker is a threat on both sides of the football. Tucker shows the ability to run clean routes while being able to break on a dime. Tucker has very good lateral quickness that he uses to advantage in tight spaces when he is running routes. When in coverage Tucker closes on the ball fast and very well. Tucker is attacking downhill on the football or receiver at a second’s notice. Tucker’s athleticism is very apparent. If you see Tucker on the island and you think because he is 5’10″ you can throw a jump ball or fade right you will be disappointed because he can jump with the best of them and he can play the football through the receiver’s hand.
4. Javon Reedy 6’0” 180lbs Class of 2022 Crandall HS / Texas Phenoms 7v7
Is an aggressive player on both sides of the ball. He played with a physical junkyard dog mentality that made his opponents either raise their performance or go home packing. Either way, it’s going to be an aggressive day vs Jaron. Jaron coming off the line of scrimmage has the speed and force to leave his defender behind. There isn’t a route Jaron can’t run and also a football he cannot jump and get. While on defense Jaron played mostly the Qb position
5. Raydin Garcia 5’11” 185lbs Class of 2025 Clearbrook HS/ Team DAB 7v7
Raydin Garcia was a playmaker who was all over the field at the Endzone 7v7 tournament. Garcia is an army swiss knife utility player. At Garcia’s size and speed, he can cover your bigger receiver or back out the backfield. Or he can line up over your slot receiver play physical and still have enough speed to cover those fast twitchy guys. Garcia plays with toughness and grit which I believe raises his performance. Garcia offensively is a producer who tends to find himself open a lot. Whether it’s due to the offensive scheme or his talent. Garcia is always often open when he needs to be. Garcia’s route running ability is solid. Garcia does a good job of being patient and reading the defensive coverage while running his designated route. Garcia is not a blazer when it comes to speed but he can get behind a defense and force them to cover the entire field consistently.
