I will begin with the quarterbacks and move through the sections in numerical order. In this article, we take a look at New York’s Section VIII. This section encompasses schools located in Kings, Nassau, Queens, and Richmond counties.
Joseph Legovich, Wantagh-2023:
Fresh off a deep playoff push in 2021, the Warriors are looking to continue their momentum into the 2022 season. Much of this success was due to quarterback, Joseph Legovich. Legovich shined passing for 553 yards, 7 touchdowns, and only 2 interceptions while adding an additional 2 touchdowns on the ground. Joseph guided Wantagh to a 7-1 regular season record and into the playoffs, where they came up short in the second round. Legovich will be surrounded by new starters almost entirely across the board on offense this season, but with a full year of experience under his belt, expect the Warriors to not miss a beat.
Nick Saragossi, Island Trees-2023:
Island Trees had a very interesting 2021. Finishing with a 4-4 record, the Bulldogs showed plenty of promise behind first year starting quarterback Nick Saragossi. Despite a heavy focus on rushing the football, Saragossi was able to display plenty of talent when given the opportunity. Nick possesses excellent ball placement and patience when relied upon to throw the football. His anticipation and ability to put the ball where only his receiver can make a play on it allow him to be an underutilized weapon in the Bulldogs offense. 2021 saw Nick pass for 321 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions on only 39 attempts. Entering his Senior year, expect Saragossi to have an increased role in the offense as the Bulldogs look to improve on their previous season.
Jonathan Bartelomei, St. Dominic-2024:
The Bayhawks relied on a stellar ground attack in 2021, resulting in just 34 offensive pass attempts. The team’s leading passer, with 31 attempts, was quarterback Jonathan Bartelomei. Bartelomei amassed 170 passing yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Jonathan contributed primarily with his legs, rushing for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bartelomei is the perfect conductor of the St. Dominic offense. 2022 is destined to see the breakout of Junior Jonathan Bartelomei.
Anthony Licci, Farmingdale-2023:
The Dalers enter the 2022 season with a voice at the signal caller position. Starter Kyle Wilson, who led Farmingdale to a 7-3 record this past season, is set to graduate this spring. Wilson’s backup, Anthony Licci appears to be the next man up this coming fall. Licci went 1 for 4 passing the football for 16 yards while having a single carry for 6 yards in 2021. Licci is a dynamic playmaker that is very slippery with the ball in his hands. This coupled with excellent timing on his throws will allow for him to shine under center for the Dalers in 2022. Expect Anthony and Farmingdale make a deep playoff push this upcoming season.
Jacques Leandre III, Long Island Lutheran-2023:
Entering 2022, the Crusaders return one of the most electric playmakers in Section VIII. Jacques Leandre III was a star in his Junior season passing for 871 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions all while completing 56.3% of his passes. In addition, Jacques displayed his deadly skillset rushing for 323 yards and 6 touchdowns this past season. Leandre III’s ability to extend plays is second to none and his dedication to keeping his eyes down field when scrambling allows him to make some spectacular throws. Entering his Senior season, Jacques should be the central figure in Long Island Lutheran’s offensive game plan. Fresh off a strong playoff run in 2021, we should see the Crusaders and their dynamic offense once again in November.
