I will begin with the quarterbacks and move through the sections in numerical order. In this article, we take a look at New York’s Section VII. This section encompasses schools located in Clinton, Essex, and Hamilton counties.
Brady Roberts, Saranac Lake-2023:
Despite a mediocre 4-5 finish to the season, Saranac Lake seems to have found something special at the quarterback position. Brady Roberts stepped into the starting role for the Red Storm in 2021 and showed promise. Roberts passed for 774 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in his first season under center. Brady throws a very accurate, catchable ball. Saranac Lake’s leading rusher and receiver, Carter Hewitt, returns for 2022. Behind the Red Storm’s dynamic backfield, Saranac Lake’s stock is on the rise for 2022.
Zach O’Connell, Peru-2023:
Peru’s Zach O’Connell burst onto the scene this past season. The Nighthawks’ field general guided them to a 7-3 record and a playoff berth in 2021. O’Connell is a true dual-threat quarterback with blazing speed and a strong arm. Even with stats not being reported, Zach stood out in his Junior season. Expect O’Connell and Peru to be terrorize Section VI in 2022.
Nathan Parliament, Beekmantown-2024:
The Eagles enter 2022 with a steady hand leading them at the quarterback position. As a Sophomore, Parliament led Beekmantown to a 2-6 record. That being said, the overall record is not a reflection of Parliament’s season. Nathan gained much needed experience under center and proved to be a solid starting option in 2021. Possessing a rocket arm and great decision making, Parliament has all the potential in the world to turn the Eagles around.
Rowan Swan, Moriah-2023:
Entering the 2022 season, the Moriah Vikings are set at the quarterback position. Moriah’s lanky signal caller, Rowan Swan, proved in 2021 that he is one of the most talented quarterbacks in Class D. Swan’s golden arm led the Vikings to the New York State Class D Championship, where they ultimately fell short to powerhouse Tioga. Standing at 6’4″ and possessing a cannon arm, the Vikings have a hidden gem under center. Moriah relied heavily on Rowan’s legs in 2021. For such a long quarterback, Swan is an excellent athlete. He has deceptive speed and seemingly glides past defenders with the ball in his hands. Playing in Class D can limit exposure for young athletes, but given Swan’s talent, his name is one that will likely be reoccurring this upcoming season.
Carson Garcia, AuSable Valley-2024:
Patriots star quarterback Eli Douglas graduating this spring leaves a massive vacancy in AuSable Valley’s offense. It seems as though the next man up is soon-to-be Junior Carson Garcia. Garcia displays tremendous athleticism as he is a three sport athlete for the Patriots and was a strong point on the defensive side of the ball in 2021 at safety. Carson saw some limited action in 2021 at quarterback as he split reps with Douglas in multiple games. Garcia’s pure athletic ability and experience at the quarterback position have him primed to start for the Patriots in 2022. If he is indeed the starter, expect big things out of Carson Garcia this year.
