Continue ReadingTime yet again for another dive into the evaluation lab and today we look at five prospects that have yet to pick up their first college offers but all five are close and on the verge of seeing that change.
All five of these prospects broken down here are legit talents that will sooner or later obtain that 1st offer and begin to see their college recruitments go into a new direction.
1. (QB) JD Sherrod JD Sherrod 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Briarcrest Chrst. | 2023 State TN (6’1 190) – Briarcrest Chrisitian
– Many know about the top names at QB in this state for the ‘23 class but scouts and coaches need to start learning about this West Tennessee signal caller because Sherrod is legit. This 6’1 athletic gunslinger brings a lot of tools to the football field that translate very well into today’s college game. Sherrod is a true dual threat that can tuck it and run but he also sports sound mechanics and a cannon right arm that shows on film the ability to make all the throws. Sherrod is a tough guy to prepare for because he brings so much variety to the football field due to his escapability from pressure and his football knowledge of knowing where to throw the ball.
What stands out the most about Sherrod is his competitive nature, always wanting to win and always wanting to improve his craft. He is dedicated to football and works constantly at improving everything about himself both on and off the field. This guy is a leader, a tough hard nosed competitor that will do anything it takes to help his team win. At this point in his recruitment, Sherrod has yet to receive his 1st offer but that should change soon because he has all the tools and traits to make it to the next level.

2. (WR) Adjatay Dabbs Adjatay Dabbs 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Greeneville | 2023 State TN (6’2 175) – Greeneville
’23 (WR) @AdjatayD – Greeneville
(6’2 175/GPA: 3.5)
– Tall & long w/ explosive traits
– Breakaway speed; Shows a 2nd gear
– Quick/Sudden mover (Great feet)
– Athletic; Can work outside or slothttps://t.co/Lakl40v9Ar#GreenDevils #EastTN23 pic.twitter.com/aWwKns5Cnf— Chris Smith (@CSmithScout) February 16, 2022
– Coaches need to start learning about Dabbs cause this dude can play and the great thing about him is that he is still young and developing. The Green Devils senior to be sports a strong junior film where it shows off his speed and explosive traits as well as his size and growth for the next level. Dabbs has the ability to take a short gain and turn it into a score very quickly. He also shows on film solid route running that will only get better in time, especially as he gets older and becomes more comfortable with what he is doing on the field. Dabbs is a tough cover for opposing defensive backs because his size alone presents problems but when he turns on the burners, it makes him even more difficult to handle. He is also quick in short spaces, so defenders must gain a grasp on him early or he will break through the tackle and head straight to the end zone.
This East Tennessee talent screams upside and potential. He presents a lot of traits at receiver that coaches would enjoy working with and seeing perform on the biggest stage. Dabbs will be a key senior for his Green Devils team this year, so I expect this 6’2 wideout to be a focal point on offense and a go to guy that has the talents to put up big numbers his senior season. Watch for this receiver to break out with college offers sooner than later!

3. (LB) Eli Denton Eli Denton 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB Walker Valley | 2023 State TN (6’0 210) – Walker Valley
– A tackling machine with high football IQ, Denton is a true middle backer with deceptive athleticism and a great nose for the ball. This Mustangs linebacker plays with tremendous effort which in turn puts around the ball on a consistent basis. Watching this Chattanooga area linebacker on film, Denton shows great instincts and a quick 1st step that puts him on the ball before the running back is able to get going. Once he makes contact, it’s over for the ball carrier as Denton wraps up his opponents with sound technique along with finishing the play in a violent manner. His passion shows up greatly on film as you see Denton flying to the ball, looking for somebody to hit!
What many scouts and coaches may not know is that Denton is a better athlete than some may think. I had the chance to see Denton compete in person at our 1st #PRZTN Showcase this year where he showed the ability to drop into space and cover down the field. He won’t be asked to cover too much on the next level but he can certainly do it. Denton brings a lot of strong traits to the field and linebacking corps that coaches will like to work with and have on their team. I expect a strong camp season ahead for Denton and that work he does this summer should spurn into college offers.

4. (S) Marco Tyson Marco Tyson 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB Bartlett | 2023 State TN (6’0 185) – Bartlett
– As we sit here in February during the offseason, Tyson stands as one of the more underrated prospects currently from the 2023 class and it’s almost surprising that he doesn’t have a college offer yet. When you watch this West Tennessee product on film, what you see is a playmaker at safety that produces at a high level and consistently puts himself around the football. Tyson sports tremendous instincts and a quick 1st step when attacking the ball. He reads the quarterback and receiver well then positions himself to make a play or come up with the interception. The Panthers star secondary defender is also a sure tackler that is more than willing to come up into the action and make a play on the ball carrier.
Tyson brings a lot of tools to the defensive backfield that plays up on the college level. He has great size, he is athletic and he is a ballhawk that you consistently find among the action. He does need to keep learning and developing like most ball players but he has a certain calmness and maturity about him that could allow him to step onto a college campus and compete for early playing time. Look for college coaches to get involved with this West Tennessee product soon as he is too talented to be passed or looked over any longer.

5. (Ath) Malaki Dowell Malaki Dowell 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB White Co. | 2023 State TN (5’10 175) – White Co.
– Truly one of the more underrated prospects in this state currently has to be Dowell. This small town prospect is a big time talent that is sitting way under the radar right now but trust me he is legit and even possibly a Power Five level prospect. Explosive, fast and tough, Dowell brings a lot of traits to the football field that gives opposing teams headaches. Last year as a junior, the Spartans star prospect ran for over 2,000 yards, producing 22 total touchdowns and producing big play after play each time he stepped onto the field. Dowell is a dynamic player that can hit the long run anytime the ball touches his hands. He can produce from the backfield, line out wide at receiver or even develop into a high quality guy on defense, playing defensive back.
Dowell might be overlooked right now due to his location but trust me this guy can play. Just ask the high school coaches he has played against and they would tell you the same thing. Dowell is a natural athlete that can seriously run. When he is not on the football field, Dowell runs track for his high school and is very close to cracking into the 4.4 status. This is the kind of versatile talent that simply knows how to play the game of football, so he could produce anywhere he is placed, especially because of his speed.
