Over the weekend, the state championships in wrestling happened in Oklahoma City. Year in and year out, some of the top football standouts also shine in wrestling throughout the winter. This year was no different as several football stars ended up capturing state championships on Saturday night. In this post, we take a look at some of those football standouts and how they faired on the wrestling mat.
CLASS 6A
Mustang 2022 defensive lineman Christian Rowland Christian Rowland 6'4" | DL Mustang | 2022 State OK captured the Class 6A state championship in the heavyweight division for the second consecutive year. It was an all defensive lineman championship match as Rowland would defeat Owasso 2023 defensive lineman Tyler Rich Tyler Rich 6'1" | DL Owasso | 2023 State OK to capture that second straight championship. The heavyweight division was full of standout linemen all across the state once again and coming in third place was Deer Creek offensive lineman Jacob Sexton Jacob Sexton 6'6" | OL Deer Creek | 2022 State OK , one of the best offensive lineman prospects in this part of the country. Sexton won the third place match and is signed to play college ball at Oklahoma.
CLASS 5A
It’s been a very good year for Collinsville and the Cardinals continued to bring in the championship gold on Saturday. Collinsville won the team championship in Class 5A to go along with that football gold ball back in December. And one of the stars from that championship football team also won a state title on Saturday night in his weight class. 2022 running back Brayden Gilkey Brayden Gilkey 6'0" | 215 lbs | RB Collinsville | 2022 State OK , who ran for well over 30 touchdowns during the fall, captured the state championship in the 195 pound division. He wasn’t the only 5A standout to have success on Saturday night. In the 182 pound division, Coweta 2022 quarterback Gage Hamm Gage Hamm 6'4" | QB Coweta | 2022 State OK would win the third place match.
CLASS 4A
To anyone who follows high school wrestling in Oklahoma, the following is not going to be surprising at all. Tuttle absolutely dominated once again. The Tigers ran away with another state championship as they had six wrestlers winning state championships. Out of the 14 weight divisions, 10 championship matches had a Tuttle Tiger in it either winning or finishing as Runner Up. Leading the way was star wrestler Harley Andrews in the heavyweight division. Andrews was a key part of Tuttle’s dominating defense on the football field but he’s headed to the next level to wrestle at Nebraska. Staying in the heavyweight division, Oologah 2022 offensive lineman Gabe Grazier Gabe Grazier 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Oolagah | 2022 State OK would win the third place match. Grazier was one of the better interior offensive linemen in the state’s senior class. He’s signed to play college ball at Central Oklahoma.
CLASS 3A
Like Class 4A, we didn’t have many gridiron stars shining in Class 3A either on Saturday night. However, we did see Pawhuska 2022 defensive lineman Lesharo Wildcat Lesharo Wildcat 6'4" | DL Pawhuska | 2022 State OK win the third place match in the 195 pound division. Wildcat has been one of the better defensive lineman prospects in the 2022 class. He climbed up the 2022 rankings in the last update in February. He finished his career as the 60th best overall prospect in the 2022 class and a borderline top ten prospect at his position. He’s signed to play college ball at Western Illinois.
