Continue ReadingThroughout this series, I will be breaking down the potential breakout players, by section and position, for the 2022 season. I will begin with the quarterbacks and move through the sections in numerical order. In this article, we take a look at New York’s Section IV. This section encompasses schools located in Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins counties. This entry will be a bit different from the previous three as some of the athletes in this article had very impressive seasons last year, but still are likely to have even better seasons in 2022.
Caden Bellis, Tioga- 2024:
Tioga’s future is in excellent hands, which was made apparent in 2021. Their star signal caller passed for 1014 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 1 interception while also adding 705 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. The ultra efficient Bellis will be entering his Junior year this upcoming season and already has a full season of starting experience under his belt. It’s hard to argue that a player who accounted for 25 total touchdowns and just a single interception has yet to breakout, but given Caden’s talent, there likely is an even more attention grabbing season on the horizon. Behind Bellis’s impressive season, the undefeated Tigers capped off their season with a 27-0 victory in the NYS Class D Championship.
Joey Tomasso, Waverly- 2024:
The Wolverines found success in 2021 behind the steady hand of Joey Tomasso. Tomasso led Waverly to a 10-1 record while passing for 1847 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions while adding 552 yards and13 touchdowns on the ground. Entering just his Junior season, Joey is primed to improve on his already impressive Sophomore season. With 2021’s leading receiver, Jay Pipher, as well as the team’s starting running back, Gage Tedesco returning, Tomasso’s breakout 2022 seems all the more imminent.
Max Sementelli, Union-Endicott- 2023:
Behind the strong arm of Max Sementelli, the Tigers of Union-Endicott rose to an 8-3 record in 2022. While Sementelli’s 2021 stats are unavailable, the Tigers averaged 24 points per game. Max possesses impeccable pocket presence as well as enough athleticism to extend plays. These attributes coupled with a rocket arm allowed Sementelli to guide Union-Endicott to their first winning record since 2017. After falling a couple games short of a State Championship in 2021, Sementelli is hungry to lead the pinnacle in 2022.
Kaden Halstead, Oneonta- 2023:
Despite the Yellowjackets finishing the season with a 4-5 record, the silver lining was the emergence of dynamic playmaking quarterback Kaden Halstead. Halstead is a gifted passer that has an amazing touch when throwing the football. As talented as he may be passing the football, he truly shines when given the opportunity to carry the rock. Although his stats from 2021 are unavailable, it is clear that Kaden has the ability to be a star for the Yellowjackets. Entering his Senior season, the ultra slippery Halstead is primed to be a name to watch in 2022.
Joey Sherwood, Newark Valley- 2023:
This upcoming fall will usher in a new era as it will be Newark Valley’s first season without three-year starter, Mike Wandell. All signs point to 2021’s leading receiver, Joey Sherwood being handed the keys to the offense. Sherwood, a former JV quarterback for the Cardinals, attempted just 2 passes last season completing 1 for 28 yards and a touchdown. With only incoming Freshman, Jackson Hoover seeming to be his competition for the starting position, Joey’s playmaking ability sets him apart. Under Sherwood’s guidance, the Cardinals should expect another deep playoff run in 2022.
