The Bixby Spartans made plenty of history on Thursday night as they beat Deer Creek 63-14 to win the 6A-2 state championship for the fourth consecutive season. It was also their seventh championship in the last eight years and the cherry on top was the record breaking 49th consecutive victory. That’s more wins than any 11-man program in Oklahoma history, breaking the record held by Wagoner. In this post, we take a look at some of the top moments the state title game, and spoiler alert, it’s all about the Spartans here.
1st Play Fireworks
After forcing a quick three and out, it should come to no surprise that the Spartans offense had the fireworks ready to go. Still, watching them execute it on the biggest stage is a little jaw-dropping. They started on their own 24 yard line, Christian Burke Christian Burke 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Bixby | 2022 State OK handed it Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK , who sprinted right. But unlike so many other times, it wasn’t Presley sprinting down the open field with the ball. He stopped and flipped a pass to a wide open Preston Solomon. The senior wide receiver flew down the sidelines for a 76 yard touchdown on Bixby’s very first offensive play. It was a fitting start for a team that averaged over 60 points per game this season. Solomon would finish his prep career with an outstanding performance of 141 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Presley’s 100th Touchdown
Bixby running back Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK has been the Spartan’s leading rusher and receiver in the last two season and entered the title game with 99 touchdowns from running, receiving and returning kicks. Following the opening touchdown, linebacker Beau Bertalli set up the Spartans with a short field. Three runs from Presley later and not only was Bixby up two scores, history was made. The senior running back had found the endzone for the 100th time in illustrious career. The tone was already set a few minutes into the game and more history would be on the horizon for the Bixby star.
Fugate INT Leads To Another Score
After Bixby raced out to their early lead, the game settled into a cagey affair with the teams trading punts. In the second quarter, Bixby would find the endzone again to take a 20-0 advantage. With Deer Creek still in search of their first first down, they ran a successful fake punt to get the ball up near to midfield. But the very next play, Cale Fulgate made a big time interception. That would take the wind out of the Antlers’ sails, especially as Burke would find Solomon for the score, then Burke ran in the ensuing two point conversion to give Bixby a commanding 28-0 lead.
Presley Goes 94 Yards Into The Record Book
By the ridiculously high standards of Presley, his touchdown to enter the 100 club was rather mundane. A short redzone area plunge that didn’t properly capture his game-breaking elusiveness or speed. Late in the second quarter, he would show both of those traits. With 54 seconds in the half and 94 yards to go, Presley would take the ball, burst outside and was off to the races. It wasn’t much of a race though, as he easily outpaced the Antlers defense on his sprint to the end zone. Not only was this his 102 career touchdown, it added to his legacy by setting the all time rushing record at Bixby. Considering the tradition of the Spartans, it’s an outstanding accomplishment and a fitting capper to an amazing career for the future Oklahoma State Cowboy.
The Streak And The Title
Since the start of the season, it seemed like it was a matter of time until Bixby was back on the field at UCO raising another gold ball. They came into the season with 36 straight wins and not only broke the record for longest winning streak by adding 13 victories this season, they were absolutely dominant while doing so. The only game that was close was week one on the road against defending 6A-1 champion Jenks, who is playing for their own title title on Saturday. Bixby raced out to a 23-0 lead in that one, and held off a Jenks rally to win 23-15. After that contest, the Spartans only trailed for 97 seconds all season. Ponca City scored a defensive touchdown to open that game, but less than two minutes later Bixby would take the lead and never look back. The average margin of victory for the Spartans was 50 points on the year, and the 49 point win in the state championship was one of the biggest margins in state championship history.
49 wins.
Seven titles in eight years.
This is one of the best runs by a program in Oklahoma history. Dare we say dynasty? Because the Spartans have earned it and now they face a new challenge next season. As they move up to 6A-1.
