The game came down to the final drive, but unfortunately, Lamar came up short and Cy-Fair advanced to the 2nd Round. Even in a losing effort, there were still some players who caught my attention throughout the game. Here are the Stand Out Players for the Lamar Texans.
Kobe Jones (2022) I 6’2″, 205 lbs. I #4 I S
Hopefully, you noticed Jones’s size. He is not a small kid! Off first glance, I thought Jones was a linebacker. Ultimately, I think the natural transition for Jones is moving him closer to the line of scrimmage in a LB/S hybrid role. Jones is a hitter, arriving with aggression on every play. He plays his best football coming downhill, filling run lanes and not allowing any ball carriers to gain any additional yards after contact. He moves in space well and can stay over the top in deep halves or in deep middle responsibilities. I think the senior can be a versatile player at the next level and be one of those players that not only does everything good, but thrives in multiple positions. Jones was fun to watch Friday night.
Tristen Brown (2024) I 5’9″ I #11 I WR
Lamar di not have much success through the air. The receiver with the most catches was their RB Weathers (more on him later). With a variety if different factors, the Lamar receiving corps were not able to make plays, which was unfortunate. I thought Brown had the play making ability for sure! Only having two catches on the night, I saw a good amount of skill from Brown to put him on my Stand Outs list. On one of his catches, which was just a hitch route, 11 displayed great speed and suddenness. He eluded most defenders and outran the rest. Brown turned what was a 3 or 4 yard catch into a 22 yard gain! I really wished the coaches schemed up a couple more plays to get him the ball in space, I believe he would’ve been a huge boost to the offense. Just a sophomore, Brown has speed for days and can only improve from here!
Kelton Weathers (2023) I 5’9″ I #22 I RB
Same as Brown, I felt like Weathers should have gotten the ball way more than he did. Not the biggest back around, Weathers ran hard. His balance really showed up Friday night, rarely getting tackled by a singular defender. 22 had this weird knack for being just fast enough to outrun you if he had a step on you, it was really fascinating and impressive to see. As mentioned above, Weathers lead the team in receptions, exhibiting natural hands and being a mismatch against LBs. I think Weathers overall night was summed up in one play. He was the return man on kickoff return. The received the ball on the far left corner of the field, roughly the 80 yard line. 22 started up the field, planting one foot in the ground, no hesitations or choppy feet (that is a no no on KO/Punt returns), darted to his right, accelerated through the gap his blockers gave him and outran everyone to the end zone! He ended up of the far right side of the numbers on the opposite side of the field, easily running 100+ yards on that return alone. Alas, all of Weathers’ hard work was for nothing, as the touchdown was called back due to a holding call. Like I said, summed up his night. The junior made the plays when his number was called, but other factors limited him. He has another year to get bigger, stronger, and faster and can really he a threat to defenses next season!
Indicative of the score and the game as a whole, there were not many ballers Friday night for Lamar. I do believe this squad has a good group of incoming seniors that will only improve the team as a whole. It is never fun saying goodbye, but I hope the Lamar Texans can bounce back and be stronger than ever!
