Continue ReadingSaguaro was able to travel west to Cactus and come out with a 42-21 W in the open division quarterfinals. Despite going up 28-7 at halftime, Cactus was able to come back quick and make it a 28-21 game with 2 early scores in the 3rd quarter. As anticipated, tons of talent was on display, so here’s a look at the top offensive players of the game:
Devon Dampier Devon Dampier 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2023 State AZ , QB, Saguaro ’23
Dampier logged his first official start of the year, and put on a very impressive performance. He threw for 143 yards and a TD, but was more of a threat with his legs as he totaled 102 yards and 3 TD’s on the ground. A definite playmaker behind center with escape artist ability and did a tremendous job extending plays, making people miss and picking up big chunks of yards. He flashed solid COD and showcased a nice hurdle for a TD, and is very dynamic with the ball in his hands. The long anticipated wait of what Dampier could do at Saguaro was on full display Friday night, and he’ll have another big test next week at Hamilton.
Will Galvan Will Galvan 5'9" | 160 lbs | ATH Cactus | 2023 State AZ , ATH, Cactus ’23
Galvan brought some Kyler Murray ability to the table on Friday night. He only threw for 60 yards, but was a magician on his feet as he racked up 78 yards and a TD on the ground, while most of those yards came on broken plays where Galvan escaped numerous sacks and frequently picked up big gains. Dangerous in space with good twitch, COD, and hip flexibility as he can make numerous opponents miss in a split second. Good burst upfield out of his cuts and possesses solid speed in space as well. A very dynamic player all around with impressive athleticism.
Jaedon Matthews Jaedon Matthews 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Saguaro | 2024 State AZ , RB, Saguaro ’24
Matthews got multiple opportunities to showcase his speed, as he busted numerous long runs on the night. He totaled 8 carries for 137 yards and a TD. Matthews shows a nice burst through an open lane and is gone once he hits the second level. He opened up the scoring on Friday night with a 70 yard TD up the gut where he broke initial contact then utilized that impressive top end speed to take it to the house. An impressive young prospect with big play ability, as he’ll continue to be a threat throughout the next two seasons.
Javen Jacobs Javen Jacobs 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Saguaro | 2022 State AZ , ATH, Saguaro ’22
Jacobs had a relatively quiet night for him, totaling 4 carries for 46 yards and 4 receptions for 59 yards, but continues to show how athletically gifted he is. He displayed good balance after contact to continue to stay up and keep momentum moving forward. Swift route runner as he does a good job setting up his routes, then gets upfield with a burst after the catch. He can make something out of nothing if he needs to, and is a fun kid to watch in space and on special teams as a return man with his creativity.
Damian Jiles Damian Jiles 5'8" | 200 lbs | RB Cactus | 2023 State AZ , RB, Cactus ’23
Jiles didn’t light up the stat sheet, but showed competitive toughness and was a scrappy kid all night. He had 15 carries for 49 yards and a TD, and took some big shots throughout the game but popped right up and continued to run hard all night. Cactus plays with a ton of heart between Jiles and Galvan, as they make for a solid 1-2 punch in the run game. He shows good burst and despite his 5’8″ 170lb frame, he’ll still bring that physicality at the POC.
