Championship History: 3-1 (5th State Title Appearance)
For the fifth time in school history, Tuttle is playing for a state championship. After losing their first ever state title game, Tuttle has won their last three appearances in the title game, including winning it all in 2018. Since the start of the 2018 season, the Tuttle Tigers have been one of the winningest programs in Class 4A along with Poteau and Wagoner. They already beat both of those teams during this playoff run in the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively. Now they look to take down perennial power Clinton to win their fourth state title in school history and the second in the last four seasons.
Offensive Production: 35.5 Points Per Game
Tuttle keeps it pretty simple when it comes to their performances this season. They run the football and then rely on their defense to shut down their opponent. That’s reason number one and number two why they are one win away from a title and a perfect season. Tuttle isn’t one of the flashy offenses as they just run, run and run the ball, averaging just over 35 points per game. They’ve only scored 50+ points on two occasions this season. Tuttle doesn’t need a 50PPG offense with the defense they have.
Defensive Production: 7 Points Per Game
We certainly have to consider Tuttle’s defense as one of the best in the state this year as they are giving up just seven points per game and come into the championship game with plenty of momentum on that side of the ball. Tuttle’s defense has four shutouts this season, including the quarterfinals against defending champion Wagoner. They have been simply dominant all season. They’ve only given up more than 13 points on just one occasion and that came in their semifinal showdown with #3 Poteau.
Notable
Just how dominant has Tuttle been since the start of the 2018 season? No other program has more wins than the Tigers and they come into Friday night’s title game with the best record over the last four seasons. Tuttle is 49-4 over the last four seasons and that’s four more wins than Poteau, who has a 45-7 record during the same time span. With a win on Friday night, Tuttle will not only win the state title but they’ll complete their second perfect season in the last four years. Tuttle came into this season as the winningest program in 4A since 2018 and nothing has changed as the season is nearing an end.
#4 CLINTON RED TORNADOES (11-1)
Sept. 4 – Beat Woodward 41-14
Sept. 10 – Lost To Heritage Hall 39-24
Sept. 17 – Game VS Millwood Cancelled
Sept. 24 – Beat Newcastle 28-14
Oct. 1 – Beat Chickasha 54-14
Oct. 8 – Beat Cache 51-7
Oct. 14 – Beat Elgin 47-6
Oct. 22 – Beat Weatherford 42-0
Oct. 29 – Beat Elk City 34-0
Nov. 5 – Beat Bethany 49-0
1st Round – Beat Harrah 41-14
Quarterfinals – Beat Bristow 30-7
Semifinals – Beat Elk City 17-7
Championship History: 16-10 (27th State Title Appearance)
For the 27th time in school history, Clinton is playing for a state championship. The Red Tornadoes are making their 27th appearance and that’s behind Jenks’ 28 state title game appearances for most in state history. Clinton is also returning to Edmond for the second consecutive season after making an unexpected run to the title game a year ago before losing to Wagoner. With a win against Tuttle, they will tie Jenks for second most titles in state history with 17. Granted, Jenks is playing for their 18th title on Saturday. Ada has the most with 19 titles.
Offensive Production: 38.4 Points Per Game
Clinton comes into the title game with one of the more balanced teams in the state, regardless of class. The offensive side of the ball is averaging nearly 40 points per game. They have a similar look to Tuttle where they run, run and run the ball and also rely on a defense that has been lights out this year. The offense has been rolling all season and not many teams have been able to slow them down. Before scoring 17 in their semifinal win, Clinton had scored at least 30 in eight straight games.
Defensive Production: 10.2 Points Per Game
Not many defenses had more momentum going into the playoffs compared to Clinton, who comes in giving up just 10 points per game. They’ve only given up 28 points in three playoff games and are playing some of their best football right now. They finished off the regular season by shutting out their final three opponents. With the exception of the week two loss to Heritage Hall, Clinton hasn’t given up more than 14 points all season and have had one of the best defenses in the state this year.
Notable
Despite being two of the better teams in Class 4A over the last several seasons, it’s been a while since these two perennial powers have faced off. You have to go back to 2009 when these two were 3A district rivals to find the last time they squared off. Tuttle has won the last two in the series but Clinton has the overall lead. Friday night will be the tenth time these two teams square off with Clinton holding a 7-2 record. This is also just the second time in series history that they’ve met in the playoffs. The other was in the 2007 semifinals when Clinton shut out the Tigers.
