The playoffs are in full swing and our coverage continues today with a look at Class 3A as the teams move into the quarterfinals. Last week, Class 3A didn’t see very many surprises as every higher seeded team advanced, with the exception of Verdigris beating Seminole on the road. But Verdigris was the higher ranked team so it was somewhat expected that they would advance. In this post, we take a look at all four quarterfinal match-ups this week.
#4 BERRYHILL (9-2) AT #2 HERITAGE HALL (11-0)
It’s a top five battle between Berryhill and Heritage Hall as the two perennial powers look to punch their ticket to the semifinals. What’s crazy about this match-up is that despite both teams being two of the better teams in Class 3A for the better part of the last ten years, this will be the first time that they’ve faced off. Both teams rolled in their first round games a week ago. Heritage Hall comes into Friday game undefeated and having an offense that is averaging nearly 50 points per game and they’ve been held under 40 points just twice this year. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have to feel ready for this battle because they’ve been competing in the toughest district in 3A with Holland Hall and Verdigris. The Chiefs will be ready but the Chargers have been flawless all year.
#10 SULPHUR (8-3) AT #1 LINCOLN CHRISTIAN (11-0)
Undefeated and top ranked Lincoln Christian will play host to Sulphur on Friday night and Sulphur not only has a long road trip ahead of them, but a tall task with Lincoln. In a battle of the Bulldogs, Lincoln certainly comes in as the favorite as they have been simply dominant all season and have blown out nearly everyone on their schedule. That has not been the case for Sulphur as they’re coming into this week with back to back three-point victories, including last week’s first round win over Anadarko. Lincoln Christian without a doubt has the top offense in Class 3A and Sulphur will attempt to somehow slow them down on Friday night. This will be the first meeting between these two teams since meeting in the 2015 quarterfinals.
#5 VERDIGRIS (10-1) AT #8 PLAINVIEW (8-3)
This quarterfinal match-up is incredibly intriguing. Two years ago, Plainview absolutely smashed Verdigris in the semifinals to advance to the state championship game. Verdigris had plenty of freshman see the field that night that are now juniors and they certainly haven’t forgotten the 2019 semifinals. These two teams also finished the regular season in similar fashions with huge wins over district rivals. Verdigris stunned defending champion Holland Hall while Plainview beat Sulphur that same night to put themselves in position to win the district championship. Verdigris went to Seminole last week and won a high-scoring affair while Plainview took care of Kingfisher in their opening round. We won’t be surprised if this game ends up featuring plenty of points.
#6 PERKINS-TRYON (9-2) AT #3 HOLLAND HALL (10-1)
Our final quarterfinal clash features defending champion Holland Hall hosting a Perkins-Tryon team that has completely flown under the radar in Class 3A this season. The Demons will come into Tulsa with plenty of confidence and will certainly not be afraid of the Dutch by any means. Holland Hall suffered an upset loss to Verdigris in week nine, along with some key injuries that same night, but have rallied to absolutely dominate their last two opponents, including a 62-0 win over Checotah last week in the first round. The Demons have been dominant this season as well. Since losing by 15 to unbeaten Heritage Hall, the Demons have been on a roll and they handled Lone Grove last week in the first round. Perkins-Tryon comes in as the underdog but they’ll be ready.
