Every Tuesday, we take a look at the top ten match-up’s across Oklahoma. It’s week six and we’re now in the second half of the 2021 regular season. This week’s games are headlined by two state championship rematches and a few other top five showdowns. But the game of the week is very clearly in Choctaw as the #2 Yellowjackets square off with #1 Bixby in a 6A-2 title game rematch. Plus many more games all across Oklahoma highlight what should be an exciting week six!
1) #1 BIXBY (5-0) AT #2 CHOCTAW (4-1)
This game has been circled on the calendar since the end of the 6A-2 state championship game a year ago. Bixby won their third straight state title and sixth in the last seven years by knocking off Choctaw in Edmond. Now, the Spartans bring their 41-game winning streak to Choctaw and look to get another massive win in what has become their “Last Dance” in Class 6A-2. Choctaw has certainly had this date circled and the Yellowjackets appear ready for the big test on Friday night against the three-time champs. It’s 1 VS 2 in 6A-2 and we don’t need to say much more to hype this one up. If you’re not looking forward to this one, check the pulse.
2) #4 BEGGS (4-1) AT #1 METRO CHRISTIAN (4-1)
It’ll be a top five showdown in Tulsa for Class 2A powers Beggs and Metro Christian. The Demons come on the road and look to knock off the two-time defending champions and when these two teams line up, it’ll certainly feature a clash of styles. Beggs is going to run, run and run the ball offensively as they have three guys who can legitimately impact the game. Meanwhile Metro Christian has always been a pass-first team and nothing has changed this year as they look to do most of their damage through the air. The winner here is going to without a doubt be in the driver’s seat for the district championship while the loser will have some work to do.
3) #3 BOOKER T WASHINGTON (4-1) AT #4 SAND SPRINGS (5-0)
While many eyes will be on the Bixby-Choctaw showdown between the top two teams in 6A-2, another showdown happens in Sand Springs as the undefeated Sandites host Booker T Washington. This begins a three-week stretch where Sand Springs plays Booker T Washington, Bixby and Choctaw in three consecutive weeks. Those three are the top three teams in 6A-2 and the Sandites are right there at number four. Booker T Washington has gotten off to a fantastic start to their season with the only blemish coming on the road against Choctaw in week four. The Sandites have been perfect but Friday’s test against the Hornets will be their toughest to date.
4) #5 CARL ALBERT (3-2) AT #6 BISHOP McGUINNESS (3-2)
It’s yet another state championship rematch as these two teams renew their rivalry with Bishop McGuinness hosting Carl Albert. For those who don’t know the history, Carl Albert has won five straight state titles in Class 5A and four of those titles came against their district rivals from Bishop McGuinness. However, McGuinness has looked very strong this season and Carl Albert has certainly hit a few speed bumps before district play began. But the defending champs looked like champions last week when they went on the road and knocked off Guthrie and will attempt to do it again this week, handing their rivals from McGuinness another loss.
5) #9 BRISTOW (4-1) AT #5 GROVE (5-0)
This game just got way more interesting after the results of week five. Bristow stunned defending champion Wagoner in the final seconds with a game-winning field goal to win it 3-0. The Pirates jumped into the top ten over the weekend after the big win and now go on the road to take on a Grove team that has been dominant throughout the first five weeks of the season. Nobody has been able to slow down Grove’s rushing attack over the last several weeks and Bristow will be the next team up. The Ridgerunners believe that this is the year that they become the new top dog in this district and the first test is Friday as they welcome in Bristow.
6) #5 MIDWEST CITY (4-1) AT #6 DEL CITY (4-1)
Yet another 6A-2 showdown happens as Del City hosts rival Midwest City. It’s a massive week in 6A-2 this week as we’re going to get a much clearer picture of who the true contenders are in both districts. The top six teams in 6A-2 are all facing off against one another and while the east side district feature the top four teams, don’t overlook the Bombers and the Eagles, who are both 4-1 and are playing tremendous football right now. Both are led by their quarterbacks and Midwest City has looked good since a season-opening loss down in Texas. Meanwhile Del City is coming off a massive win on the road against a Stillwater team that has dominated this district.
7) #5 MOORE (5-0) AT #8 NORMAN NORTH (3-2) (THURS.)
If you had the Moore Lions checking in as the last of the unbeaten teams in 6A-1 before the season began, we salute you. However, arguably their toughest test to date comes on Thursday as they travel to face Norman North and their high-powered passing offense. The T’Wolves are the best team that the Lions have faced so far this season and that will only continue as they compete in a district that features Union, Owasso and Mustang. However, the Lions have looked good so far this season and are playing with plenty of momentum. Norman North can’t afford another district loss and will be playing like their season depends on it Thursday.
8) #10 COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN (4-1) AT #3 WASHINGTON (5-0)
This game was one that we had circled on our calendar back in August when it came to Class 2A. However, Community Christian lost their season-opener to Crossings Christian and it lost some of it’s luster. Fast forward to today and that hype is back as the Royals have won four straight since that opening season loss and Washington has looked absolutely dominant and appear to be well on their way back to another state championship appearance. This is a very competitive district but the district champ might be the winner of this match-up and will set them up for a strong run once the playoffs get here.
9) #7 MUSTANG (3-2) AT #2 UNION (4-1)
Union might have been tested on the road last week against Putnam City but in the end, they got out of the OKC area with a 28-point victory. Now they return home to host a Mustang team that is one of the more difficult teams to predict. This is a team that is two losses away from being undefeated and those two losses both happened in the final minute. The Mustang offense is incredibly balanced but when it comes down to it, they can air it out. Union has made no secret about what they want to do on the offensive side of the ball as they look to ground and pound their opponents. Both teams are unbeaten in district play. This game is huge for playoff seeding purposes.
10) #1 HOLLAND HALL (5-0) AT #10 VINITA (4-1)
This district might be the best in Class 3A as they currently have four teams ranked within the top ten. Last week, Berryhill knocked off Verdigris and this week, the district showdown features Vinita hosting defending champion and top ranked Holland Hall. The Hornets jumped into the top ten over the weekend and they’re looking to pull off a massive upset on Friday night. Nobody has come close to knocking off the defending champs from Holland Hall but this district is without a doubt a tough one. The Dutch will be tested a few times between now and November. But the big question is how many of those tests will they pass easily?
