We have gotten to see the 2022 class explode in their senior seasons, as they get set for the next chapter in their football careers. It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of legacies these players make for themselves in the next month of playoff football. With the December rankings update just a month away, we are putting the final touches on the regular season risers list. Many athletes outperformed their expectations in the fall 2021 season and it’s been intriguing to watch players rise to the occasion for their school.
This week, I attended Dakota vs. Roseville to see some interesting recruits in action. Both of these teams have fire power on both sides of the ball, with a big number of Division 1 and 2 recruits for 2022 and beyond. Roseville ATH Tyrell Henry Tyrell Henry 6'0" | 160 lbs | ATH Roseville | 2022 State MI is set to play for Michigan State next season under Mel Tucker, but there’s a good chance he has some unfinished business to complete for Roseville.
Dakota won the game 34-7 thanks to dominate defense and rushing attack. Here’s a look at some of the rankings risers from this showdown and the season.
Cooper Phillips Cooper Phillips 6'4" | 285 lbs | OL Macomb Dakota | 2022 State MIPhillips maintains his position as one of the top offensive lineman in the state after a tremendous 2021 regular season. His big frame and strength continue to dominate in the trenches and it’s shows in Dakota’s rushing attack. Phillips can get low and drive defensive lineman off the football and even move up to the next level and make a block down field. The Grand Valley State commit is looking forward to ending his high school career on a high note as the Cougars prepare for the playoffs.
Keyone Nixon Keyone Nixon 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Macomb Dakota | 2022 State MIAnother standout for Dakota this season is the elusive defensive back who is committed to Morgan State, after recently flipping from Akron. He has a nice frame for a defensive back and has some long arms. His ability to mirror receivers and even regroup after mistakes in coverage is part of Nixon’s game that makes him special. He is a dominate defensive back who took advantage of a huge stock rise during the summer circuit. Look for Nixon to move way up the December rankings update as he gets better every single game.
Tyrell Henry Tyrell Henry 6'0" | 160 lbs | ATH Roseville | 2022 State MIWhen you watch a Roseville game, it becomes completely obvious who their leader and heart of the team is. Henry is that guy for the Panthers, and it showed Friday despite the tough loss. Henry was tough to tackle and made some plays on Friday that almost gave Roseville a spark. The Michigan State commit is going to be a stud at the next level, as he can play both sides of the ball and doesn’t have a real weakness to his game.
Malachi Clark Malachi Clark 6'2" | 285 lbs | DL Roseville | 2022 State MIClark is as big as you’d expect a division one defensive lineman to look in person, but it’s still impressive to see his shear size up close. The Miami (Ohio) commit is a load to handle inside, at just under 300 pounds. His hands and technique are solid and he doesn’t get his pad level too high despite being 6’2. Clark is going to be a problem to handle at the next level and he’ll look to show that to end his career at Roseville.
Caiden Sloan Caiden Sloan 5'11" | 195 lbs | RB Macomb Dakota | 2022 State MIIt’s shocking that this kid does not have any collegiate offers yet. On Friday night, Sloan had arguably one of the most impressive performances in the state this season, scoring four touchdowns from the backfield and looking like a superstar on the field all night. He runs hard and low to the ground, which makes him tough to tackle and if your pad level is too high, he will run over you. Expect Sloan to get much more attention from colleges after a strong 2021 campaign.
