Get 25% off your subscription by entering Knight25 in the coupon code area. Enjoy! Every Sunday, we’ll look at some of the top individual performances from the week that was in high school football. And typically, we will limit it to ten selections but we also make the rules and can therefore bend the rules. So if we see a week where individuals just go off and we need to feature more “stat sheet stuffers” we absolutely will do that. And this week is one of those weeks! This is part one of a two part feature today where we’ll look at a total of 20 standouts from week one. But no matter how many we feature, we will always be right here on Sunday’s, looking at the best performances from the previous week in high school football. As always, you can tweet your picks to us on Twitter @PrepRedzoneOK or email your picks to michael@prepredzone.com. Be sure not to just include the individual but also include the stats! [player_tooltip player_id="154570" first="Blake" last="Jones"] - 2022 Running Back - Sand Springs 20 Carries | 224 Yards | 3 Touchdowns The first of two players that were on this list last week is Sand Springs senior running back [player_tooltip player_id="154570" first="Blake" last="Jones"]. His performance last week against rival Sapulpa was outstanding but he took his game to another level in a road win over Bishop Kelley. The Sandite senior ran for 224 yards and three touchdowns after running for 181 yards last week. Jones has quickly become one of the breakout stars of the young season. After seeing him this offseason, it isn’t much of a surprise to us. [player_tooltip player_id="38715" first="Camden" last="Crooks"] - 2023 Athlete - Cushing 12 Catches | 205 Yards | 2 Touchdowns | 12 Tackles 4A’s top ranked Cushing got their season underway with a win over Bristow on Friday night. The Tigers come into this year with high expectations and their standout junior class is a big reason why. Leading the way in that class is two-way star [player_tooltip player_id="38715" first="Camden" last="Crooks"] at receiver and defensive back. In their season opener, Crooks finished with 12 catches for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also added 12 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. He’ll be one of the bigger stars in 4A football this fall. [player_tooltip player_id="38723" first="Daylan" last="Thompson"] - 2022 Running Back - Elk City 23 Carries | 387 Yards | 4 Touchdowns Elk City is a dangerous team to watch this season in Class 4A and senior running back [player_tooltip player_id="38723" first="Daylan" last="Thompson"] is the biggest reason why. When you first see him, you notice that he’s undersized in the height department but if you see him up close, you see how built he is already and the size becomes a non-factor. Thompson showed that in a road win on Thursday night as he ran for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns. We have Elk City as a sneaky team in a loaded 4A district strictly because of Thompson at running back. [player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"] - 2022 Quarterback - Norman North 13-16 | 302 Yards | 5 Touchdowns | 10 Carries | 89 Yards Another standout from Thursday’s games was one that we got a chance to see in person. Norman North got the big rivalry win over Norman and it was clear that they’ll be able to air it out a lot this fall. Princeton quarterback commit [player_tooltip player_id="108886" first="Gavin" last="Frakes"] was lights out in his season opener, throwing for just over 300 yards and five touchdowns on 13-16 passing. He also added 89 yards on ten carries to help out in the run game. If this is what’s to come for Frakes, Norman North could surprise some teams this fall. Jaxon Woods - 2024 Quarterback - Hominy 14-24 | 160 Yards | 1 Touchdown | 23 Carries | 206 Yards | 5 Touchdowns Yet another Thursday night standout was Hominy sophomore quarterback Jaxon Woods. It was one of the bigger rivalries as Hominy took on Cleveland and Hominy was able to get the win behind a big performance from their sophomore quarterback. He did almost all of his scoring damage on the ground, as he finished with over 200 yards and five touchdowns rushing. But he also threw for 160 yards and a touchdown on 14-24 passing. Watch out for Woods and the Bucks in Class A. [player_tooltip player_id="53320" first="Landon" last="Lagasse"] - 2022 Wide Receiver - Cashion 13 Catches | 286 Yards | 5 Touchdowns It was bounce back time for Cashion after losing to Rejoice Christian in week zero, they took their frustrations out on Perry in week one and got a big win Friday. The passing game was lights out and senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="53320" first="Landon" last="Lagasse"] benefitted greatly from it. He made 13 catches for 286 yards and five touchdowns. Needless to say, senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="52273" first="Ben" last="Harman"] had a terrific night throwing the ball, and it was his favorite target Lagasse that had a career night in the receiving category. Marcellous Hawkins - 2022 Quarterback - Putnam City 7-15 | 116 Yards | 1 Touchdown | 24 Carries | 145 Yards | 4 Touchdowns Putnam City got a huge rivalry win over Putnam City North on Friday night and the Pirates leaned on their senior quarterback to lead them to the big victory. Senior QB Marcellous Hawkins was dynamic for the Pirates in the double overtime victory on Friday. Hawkins was at his best when he was running the ball. He carried it 24 times for 145 yards and four touchdowns, including two TD’s in the two overtime periods. He also threw for just over 100 yards and a touchdown on 7-15 passing. [player_tooltip player_id="52787" first="Max" last="Brown"] - 2022 Quarterback - Lincoln Christian 17-27 | 200 Yards | 2 Touchdowns | 18 Carries | 187 Yards | 2 Touchdowns The other player that is making his second appearance as a top performer is Lincoln Christian quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="52787" first="Max" last="Brown"]. For the second straight week, Lincoln Christian took down a top five team from Class 2A. This week, it was on the road against Jones and included a battle between two of the best senior quarterbacks in the state and plenty of drama. Brown threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and ran for nearly 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But down 29-28 with 40 seconds left, he led the game-winning drive that ended in a game-winning field goal as time expired. [player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"] - 2022 Athlete - Union 32 Carries | 210 Yards | 3 Touchdowns We’ve written plenty about Union’s rushing attack and how it’s arguably the best in Oklahoma. Well, it was on full display on Friday night in their rivalry win over Broken Arrow. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id="38703" first="Rovaughn" last="Banks"] had a career night running the football as they leaned on him in the win. He finished with 32 carries for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Banks continues to be a unique weapon in the Union offense and can be so dangerous in the passing game as well. But on Friday, it was all about him toting the rock. Tristen Russell - 2023 Quarterback - Mustang 16-22 | 332 Yards | 4 Touchdowns Mustang absolutely dominated Yukon in their annual rivalry meeting and they made no secret about how they wanted to do their damage on offense and that was airing it out. Benefitting from that was Mustang’s junior quarterback Tristen Russell, who had a huge night with 332 yards and four touchdowns on 16-22 passing. Russell certainly has weapons at receiver like [player_tooltip player_id="38777" first="Jacobe" last="Johnson"], [player_tooltip player_id="38795" first="Keegan" last="Bass"] and even tight end [player_tooltip player_id="38670" first="Andre" last="Dollar"]. But Russell was incredibly efficient leading the passing attack.
