You could say Del City enjoyed its homecoming game.
Del City (3-1) steamrolled rival Northwest Classen 62-0 Thursday night, opening district play with a convincing win. Scoring 56 in the first half, the Eagles controlled the game from beginning-to-end. They’re presumably having a pretty good time this Friday morning at DCHS.
Below is a list of the most outstanding Del City prospects from the match:
Virgil Yates Virgil Yates 5'10" | ATH Del City | 2022 State OK | Del City ’22 |
5’11″ QB | Not committed |
Yates accounted for three touchdowns, one on the ground and two in the air, and a total of 102 yards for the night against Northwest Classen.
After a slow start passing the ball, in which it appeared the Eagles were trying to work out kinks in the passing game, Yates competed his last four attempts, two of which went for gains of 30-plus. He also scores the Eagles’ first touchdown on a 20-yard off-tackle run.
Yates is a package deal at quarterback. He’s smart, is a developing defense-reader, is quick, can evade tacklers, and can pass the ball well down-field. He habitually put the ball where only his guy had a chance to make a play Thursday night.
Ethan Lawrence Ethan Lawrence 6'0" | Wide Receiver Westmoore | 2022 OK | Del City ’22 |
5’9″ RB | Not committed |
Lawrence never rushed for less than a first down, recording a team-high 97 rushing yards on five carries with two touchdowns.
Lawrence understands the virtues of patience and being careful, displaying also great feel for the field in his Thursday-night performance. Coach Robert Jones commended Lawrence’s skillset after the win.
“[Lawrence] has great vision, he has a great burst,” Jones said. “It was very exciting to see him get out there tonight.”
Aaron Carter | Del City ’24 |
6’3″ LB | Not committed |
There isn’t much that needs to be said for defensive player that scores on back-to-back plays. From our game recap:
With 4:30 to go in the second quarter, Carter picked off the Northwest Classen quarterback across the middle. Thanks to a long field provided by a Samuel Johnson 62-yard punt moments before, Carter only had about 5 yards to-go out of the interception to get into the end zone. After the following touchback that set the Knights up at the 20, the Northwest Classen quarterback set up to pass again on first down; it appeared he was looking for a flood concept of some sort, but somebody made a mistake as his pass, about ten yards down-field, was well past his shallow receiver and well short of his downfield receiver. Nobody was in the area but Carter, who stretched to catch the ball before heading untouched the opposite direction. His second score gave the Eagles a 28-0 lead early. |
