Even as modern football becomes increasingly pass happy and spread out, games are still often won and lost in the trenches. If last Friday night’s win over Carl Albert was any indication, Del City will be winning games all season long with their physical playing style. The Eagles have a quick and powerful game on the ground. And the same can be said about their swarming front seven on defense. There was no shortage of top performers in their 52-20 victory, so let’s get to talking about them.
Jaedon Foreman

, Junior Edge
Foreman wrecked shop all night from the edge. He was simply too quick and strong for the Carl Albert offensive tackles, as he made his mark on run stops and rushing the passer. He got to the quarterback at least twice on the night and had a seemingly endless number of tackles for losses or no gain. His closing speed off the edge is great for a player his size. Once the game tape from Foreman’s dominant performance gets out, the offers should continue to roll in for the talented junior.
Jayson Smith

, Senior Running Back/Linebacker
The bruising senior left his mark on both ends of the field. On offense he routinely broke arm tackles, shoved away defenders with stiff arms and earned the tough yards. Defensively he was an eager tackler, willing to stick his nose in traffic to blow up run plays. Smith drew a personal foul for a power bomb like finish to a tackle. While the penalty was a negative in the short term, in the long term it highlights the tenacity and love of contact the senior plays with.
Ethan Lawrence

, Senior Running Back
“Speed Kills” is one of the top comments from my game notes. It was used to describe Lawrence’s first touchdown of the night. The converted wide receiver took the handoff and exploded outside, then was able to beat the final man near the goalline for the score midway through the second quarter. Before that run, Lawrence had already looked impressive juking out defenders and ripping off chunk plays. From that point forward it was evident the type of weapon the Eagles have on their hands. To go along with his game-capping 30 yard touchdown run late in the game, the quick running back also took a kickoff back to the house. Because again, “Speed Kills”
Virgil Yates

, Senior Quarterback
From a quarterback standpoint, Yates made enough throws to keep the defense honest. Especially when he hit on a deep ball in the first quarter. But it’s his quick feet and powerful core that makes the senior leader standout. He’s shifty in the open field, able to accelerate into openings and elude tacklers. While shorter, he’s compact and powerful which means defenders had to wrap up or he’d be able to slip out of tackles or drag defenders extra yards. Even if it’s not quarterback, Yates has the athletic ability and toughness to continue his playing career beyond high school.
David Stone

, Sophomore Defensive Lineman
One of the reasons the other members of the Del City defense was able to hunt for tackles was because the super sophomore was controlling the middle of the field as a nose tackle. Along with occupying offensive linemen, Stone was still able to record a few tackles when Carl Albert tried to run up the middle. He also showed that he’s more than power. In the third quarter, he was the one to run down a jetsweep at the line of scrimmage. It’s scary to think what the talented young defensive lineman becomes.

, Junior Defensive Back
With a run based attack, the Division One recruit didn’t have the busiest night defending the pass. But he showed his D1 athletic ability in the third quarter when he was the Eagle to explode off the edge and block a Titan punt.
Jaylin Sweet, Junior Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Add Sweet to the list of speedmakers for the Eagles. He showed that speed when he broke a 80 yard touchdown in the second quarter. He caught a post route over the middle and then turned on the jets. The junior also caught a similar pass over the middle in the third quarter, for a shorter score.
