Bishop Battle looked a little different this year.
After being bested by the Comets 21-35 in 2020, Bishop McGuinness defeated Bishop Kelley 49-6 at home Friday night. It was the first win for McGuinness on the season, who improves to 1-1, as Kelley falls to 0-3 with losses to Poteau and Sand Springs.
TURNING POINT |
After Kelley went three-and-out on its opening possession, a pair of Mike Taffe consecutive carries that went for 26 and 13 yards for a score, putting McGuinness up 7-0 to start.
I don’t mean to be flippant, but from my perspective, the turning point of the game came three-and-a-half minutes into the match; on the ensuing kickoff, a lofty strike from Will Kilgallon that fell into a Kelley returner’s hands on the half-yard line, the returner mismanaged the ball as the McGuinness kickoff coverage swarmed him, fumbling it and turning over the ball on the 3-yard line.
Taffe scored out of the wildcat on the following play, and McGuinness went up 14-0 with 9:38 to go in the first quarter. After that, it felt like the air had been sucked out of Kelley’s sideline, and the Irish had full control of the game, taking a 35-0 lead going into half.
PLAYER OF THE GAME |
Mike Taffe | RB/ATH | Bishop McGuinness ’23 |
Scoring four touchdowns on the night, it was clear that Taffe was the most unstoppable playmaker on the field Friday night, tallying 154 all-purpose yards on the night.
His most impressive score was his third, when Kelley defenders broke through the McGuinness line, and Taffe was forced to bounce a run to the outside. After taking a few steps back, it seemed sure that a Kelley defender would wrap him up, but Taffe instead bounced off the defender, accelerated downhill, and beat the remaining Comets defenders on the angle and took the run 36 yards up the sideline to put the Irish up 21-0 in the second quarter.
QUOTABLE |
These teams don’t, nor have they ever liked each other. This week’s quote isn’t from a player, but instead from the McGuinness student section Twitter account, “m.A.A.d City,” presumably named after Kendrick Lamar’s 2011 album. Let’s face it — these types of rivalries are so much better in the social media era.
Within minutes of the loss, the m.A.A.d City crew tweeted this graphic, a spoof of popular rapper Drake’s latest album, Certified Lover Boy, remixing its artwork:

We don’t know if graphic design is funded through the Bishop McGuinness curriculum, but it’s glorious work nonetheless ☘️
