Del City 62, Northwest Classen |
You could say Del City enjoyed its homecoming game.
Del City (3-1) steamrolled rival Northwest Classen 62-0 Thursday night, opening district play with a convincing win. Scoring 56 in the first half, the Eagles controlled the game from beginning-to-end. They’re presumably having a pretty good time this Friday morning at DCHS.
TURNING POINT |
As we said before, the Eagles had this one from the start. Del City coach Robert Jones mentioned how much the early momentum benefitted his team early, but he hopes his team doesn’t become reliant on early success.
“Momentum is big,” Jones said, “but momentum can’t be the final factor, you know, some games we’re gonna start out slow. . . so we wanna get that, but we also don’t want it to be a factor to where it decides the end of the game.”
The Eagles got the ball to start the game and took off; a first down, then another, then a touchdown via quarterback Virgil Yates Virgil Yates 5'10" | ATH Del City | 2022 State OK gave Del City an early 7-0 lead.
After forcing the Knights three-and-out the following possession, the Eagles recovered a fumble on Northwest Classen’s punt attempt, giving them a short field to work with.
Running back Ethan Lawrence Ethan Lawrence 6'0" | Wide Receiver Westmoore | 2022 OK got in from 18 yards shortly after the turnover, and after that, the Knights appeared hopeless.
PLAYER OF THE GAME |
Offensively, the Eagles relied heavily on the contributions of Lawrence on the ground.
The senior back never rushed for shorter than 16 yards, with each of his five carries going for first downs before he was sat in the second half. He scored twice, accruing 98 yards for the night.
Defensively, it was Aaron Carter who takes the crown for player of the game.
Carter, a sophomore, recorded two — yes, two — defensive touchdowns in four seconds of game clock. You read that right.
With 4:30 to go in the second quarter, Carter picked off the Northwest Classen quarterback across the middle. Thanks to a long field provided by a Samuel Johnson 62-yard punt moments before, Carter only had about 5 yards to-go out of the interception to get into the end zone.
After the following touchback that set the Knights up at the 20, the Northwest Classen quarterback set up to pass again on first down; it appeared he was looking for a flood concept of some sort, but somebody made a mistake as his pass, about ten yards down-field, was well past his shallow receiver and well short of his downfield receiver.
Nobody was in the area but Carter, who stretched to catch the ball before heading untouched the opposite direction. His second score gave the Eagles a 28-0 lead early.
QUOTABLE |
The Eagles recorded a first down and/or touchdown on nine of its first 10 rushing attempts Thursday night. Jones said his offensive line created the movement he wanted from that unit.
“You know, our offensive line has shown up all year,” Jones said, “they’ve been getting after it, and they did the same thing tonight that they’ve been doing, getting off the ball, firing off, getting the push.”
