Last week we saw a massive upset with Adams defeating defending D1 champion West Bloomfield, we saw stars show out, and we saw many underclassmen shine. From the OAA to Detroit, here are 4 of the many great Detroit area matchups this week.
Games to watch
King (0-1) vs Mona Shores (1-0) – If this matchup doesn’t hype you up, I don’t know what will. Two teams needing absolutely no introduction, King and Mona Shores are in state championship contention year after year. Last week, King lost on a hail-mary to Carmel, one of the best teams in Indiana. In other words, don’t let the 0-1 fool you. King is king and they’re going to come to play when the lights come on. King is led by 5-star ’23 QB Dante Moore Dante Moore 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Detroit King | 2023 State MI along with incredible receiver talent such as Lynn Wyche-El Lynn Wyche-El 5'9" | 165 lbs | WR Detroit King | 2022 State MI Jr, Jameel Croft Jameel Croft 6'1" | 165 lbs | DB Detroit King | 2023 State MI Jr, among MANY others. Mona Shores on the other hand is the defending DII state champion from way out on the Lake Michigan coast. They’ve lost a good amount of senior talent, but they’ve reloaded and are ready to go. QB Mark Konecny Mark Konecny 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Mona Shores | 2022 MI and WR Demetri Roberson connected for a 92-yard TD in week 1, and Mona Shores is going to need some big-play ability to win against King on the road.
Lake Orion (1-0) @ North Farmington (1-0) – Two great, experienced teams will face off this Friday, and could very well have huge league implications. RB James Patterson Jr for Lake Orion needs to have a great game against North Farmington’s OLB Logan Kejbo and DE Chike Udemba if the Dragons expect to win. This is a solid OAA Red vs White matchup with two teams that have been playing well lately. If I were in the area, I would watch this game.
Oxford (0-1) @ Rochester Adams (1-0) – Rochester Adams did the unthinkable pulling off the biggest upset of the past few years as they defeated West Bloomfield, the 2020 D1 State Champions, 35-17. Adams went 3-5 in 2020 while losing 2 games by 3 points or less. Adams has nice talent with QB Parker Picot and SB Anthony Patritto, as they’re a veer team that passes a bit more than teams like Seaholm or Cadillac. On Oxford’s end, they’re a solid team that would be favored if Adams didn’t win week 1. TE Austin Witt, I see as a mismatch that Oxford can utilize well. Although Adams is getting lots of coverage right now, Oxford has a great chance to slow their momentum.
Ferndale (0-1) @ Troy Athens (1-0) Sept. 2 – A great OAA Blue matchup, Ferndale travels to Troy Athens. Last week, Athens won against a team that hasn’t won a single game since 2018, so they’ll get their first real test this Thursday. Athen’s RB Trey Vincent looks to show out for his senior year against a Ferndale defense led by DE Jordan Malone. It should be interesting to see who comes out on top in this one.
COVID-19 cancelations are still a possibility. Every week there will be a chance that games are postponed for this reason. Make sure to check local news outlets, Prep Redzone Twitter, and other sources to make sure any game you’re looking to see is still on.
