Whether it lining up on the line or in the slot or even on the outside, the tight end can be a mismatch nightmare with the ability to outrun linebackers and out physical safeties.
Tight ends need to show aspects of both the run and pass game, they need to show the physicality and willingness to block and the athletic awareness to be able to create separation in coverage and show soft hands in the passing game.
Let’s take a look at three 2022 Tight Ends from the state of New Jersey for the upcoming season.
William Dixon 6-5 220 Hillsborough High School, Hillsborough New Jersey
The big athletic Akron commit has soft hands and shows the natural ability to find the open seam in coverage and attack it to make key plays. He can line up in the slot and be a mismatch nightmare for linebackers where he can slip behind them and make them miss in open space where he shows his natural athletic ability.
Owen Anderson Owen Anderson 6'4" | 240 lbs | TE The Hun School | 2022 State NJ 6-5 235 The Hun School of Princeton, Princeton New Jersey
The physical athletic Illinois commit shows his versatility by being able to line up in the slot and being able to be an inline (on the line of scrimmage) tight end as well throughout a game. He demonstrates strong hands and makes the tough contested catches in tight coverage and gains yards after the catch to prolong offensive drives.
Trent McGaughey Trent McGaughey 6'3" | 240 lbs | TE St. Peter's Prep | 2022 State NJ 6-3 225 St. Peters Prep High School, Jersey City New Jersey
A dynamic athlete out in space, he feels comfortable with the ball in his hand and shows that he accelerate after the catch and make defenders miss in the open field. He demonstrates a clear-cut route running ability, he transitions in and out of his breaks with fluid and effortless steps which allows him to create separation in coverage from defenders.
