The Longhorns kicked off the ‘21 season Friday night at home against 4A- #7 Bethany. While the Longhorns took the loss they did have a few notable performers as well as some that they are counting on to contribute this season. [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"]- 2022 Quarterback
By now everyone who follows Oklahoma high school football knows the name [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"]. He is the consensus #1 QB prospect in the state and one of the biggest and best players in the state (regardless of position). The Iowa Hawkeye commit showed Friday night that he is ready to continue building on his strong numbers from last season by opening up his SR campaign with 305 yards passing on 21-35, with two TD's through the air. May put up these numbers despite being under constant pressure all night from the Bethany defense. The Longhorns have the potential to make a deep run this year, but that will be largely based on how far May can carry them.
[player_tooltip player_id="188828" first="Cadyn" last="Karl"]- 2022 Wide Receiver
Other than the talent Jones has at the quarterback position there was one other player on the offensive side of the ball that showed big time playmaking ability Friday night. Jones SR receiver [player_tooltip player_id="188828" first="Cadyn" last="Karl"] was as close to a one man show in the pass catching department as it gets. With 21 completions and 305 total passing yards on the night Karl was responsible for catching 8 of those passes as well as 217 yards through the air. Look for Karl to have a big year and easily be the top target for May the entire year.
Kameron Estrada-2023 Defensive Lineman
The junior defensive lineman for the Longhorns isn’t the most physically imposing player on the field, but that doesn’t mean that he won’t be a key player for the Longhorn defense this season. At 6’2” 230lbs Estrada is slightly undersized in the trenches but makes up for it with a great motor. Estrada has steadily improved in the Jones program the last 3 seasons and if Jones is going to live up to the preseason #2 ranking then they will definitely need more out of Estrada and their defense than we saw on Friday night.
Biggest X-Factor: Offensive Line
Instead of going with one player here, I’m going with the entire group. [player_tooltip player_id="38671" first="Carson" last="May"] was under constant pressure Friday and having a grand total of 13 yards rushing on 22 carries simply won’t get it done. With seniors up front like [player_tooltip player_id="53168" first="Jack" last="Corbin"] (6’5” 290lbs), and Reese Webb (6’4” 315lbs) the Longhorns offensive line has to provide more adequate protection as well as creating a push for their talented signal caller to get into the end zone when they’re inside the 5 yard line. Their success and depth of a run in the playoffs could be determined on how well this group can come together by seasons end.
