It’s week zero and we have some great match-up’s all across Oklahoma, and even in some bordering states. Yesterday, we released the Week Zero Top Ten Games. And today, we’re taking a look at some of the marquee match-up’s between Oklahoma schools and out of state programs. Some of these teams are very familiar with each other, some might be in over their heads when they get to Oklahoma. While we admit that there are a few more out of state match-up’s that we don’t have listed here, these are some of the best of the week. And the following five have some of the more intriguing storylines going into the week.
All Saints Episcopal, TX. AT Holland Hall
It’s time for a throw back to the old Southwest Prep Conference days for Holland Hall! They’ll open up the season against All Saints Episcopal out of Fort Worth, Texas. These two teams were opponents when the Dutch were playing in the Southwest Prep Conference for years. The last time they met was in Holland Hall’s final year in 2015. They played each other in four consecutive seasons and it wasn’t pretty for the Dutch. They went 0-4 during that time and lost 33-0, 49-34, 52-3 and 62-0. All Saints is no longer in the Southwest Prep Conference either. They now participate in TAPPS, which is a private school league in Texas. Their first year in TAPPS was 2017 and they went 11-1. However, in the last three seasons, they are a combined 10-17, with a 3-4 record last year. So this might be a completely different match-up from what we saw in the SPC days. Holland Hall is coming off a perfect season and their first ever state championship. They bring back a wealth of talent and come into this season as the preseason #1 team in Class 3A. The Dutch certainly come into this match-up as the favorite. And while none of the players in this match-up were on the team the last time these two teams faced off, head coach Tag Gross is still in charge. He’ll probably be reminding his squad what happened back in the day.
Beacon Hill, VA. AT Choctaw
Virginia? We can’t say we remember the last time a Virginia school came to Oklahoma to square off with one of our programs but here we are. Choctaw will be hosting a home school team out of Richmond, Virginia. A near 1,300 mile trip is in store for Beacon Hill as they travel west to Oklahoma. And after doing a little research, via maxpreps, it appears that this will be the second year of football for the home school program out of Richmond. The majority of their games this year will be on the road and will feature out of state competition. From the Carolinas to Tennessee, they’ll be putting some miles on the tires this fall, but Oklahoma is certainly the longest trip. This game was recently scheduled and was done so because a previous Choctaw opponent had dropped the Yellowjackets. Choctaw is one of the best teams in Oklahoma this year and all three of their non-district games are against out of state competition. Granted, the other two are Arkansas and Texas. A little more manageable of a drive. We don’t know much about Beacon Hill, but from what we do know, this should be a Choctaw rout on Friday night.
Greenwood, AR. AT Muskogee
Greenwood has been one of the best programs in Arkansas over the last decade. They are coming off a 14-0 perfect season in 2020 that ended with a state championship. They’ve had at least ten wins in ten of the last eleven seasons and they’ll be opening up the 2021 season in Oklahoma against Muskogee. It’s going to be quite the contrast in this match-up. While Greenwood was perfect last year, Muskogee was anything but. The Roughers went 0-7 a year ago. They didn’t play the final three games of the regular season and then were bounced out of the playoffs in the first round. However, first year head coach Travis Hill is breathing new life into the program. The Roughers are already off to a good start this year and they haven’t even played a game yet. They have a freshman at quarterback in Jamarian Ficklin. He’s incredibly raw, but he also showed flashes last week during scrimmages. Speaking of last week, after going winless a year ago, they beat five-time defending 5A champion Carl Albert in a two-quarter mini game. They did so with some late game heroics with a go-ahead touchdown pass as time expired. Now, Greenwood is another big challenge but the Roughers already had one and it went well. We’re interested to see how they open up the year on Friday.
Mansfield Timberview, TX. AT Bixby
Because of the Covid pandemic, the annual Border Battle between the Mansfield schools and Tulsa-area programs was cancelled. This year, it’s back on, with four Mansfield schools facing Bixby, Broken Arrow, Jenks and Union. The other three match-up’s are listed below. This is the one we’re spotlighting because for Mansfield Timberview, they’ve been waiting for this one for a while. The last time these two were on the same field, it was a blood bath. The Spartans won 77-47 and the Spartans had to try not to score more that evening in Texas. Bixby also won 36-33 the year before. Timberview certainly hasn’t forgotten that and is coming up north with bad intentions. Not only can they get a little revenge that ended up being two years in the making, but they can end Bixby’s lengthy winning streak. The Spartans have won 36 games in a row and have a chance at state history if they go undefeated again this year. Timberview could end all of that in week zero on Friday night. When they gave up 77 to the Spartans in 2019, it was Brennan Presley who torched them. Now they have to worry about running back Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK , who’s ready for his senior season and has some lofty expectations. That could be bad news for Timberview.
Pilot Point, TX. AT Plainview
One of the best running backs in the country is coming up to Oklahoma and he could put on a show. Pilot Point, Texas is led by senior running back Ish Harris, a Texas A&M commit. Harris is widely considered one of the best running backs in the state as well as in the country. He’s a 6’4, 200 pound machine and Plainview will certainly have their work cut out for them. However, Plainview isn’t some massive underdog coming into this Oklahoma VS Texas battle. The Indians are a preseason top five team in Class 3A and have a chance to make their second trip to the state title game in the last three years. They have a very talented bunch with a standout athlete of their own in junior wide receiver Morgan Pearson Morgan Pearson 6'2" | 220 lbs | ATH Plainview | 2023 State OK , who is one of the top receivers in Oklahoma. Pilot Point beat Plainview last year 30-20 down in Texas. However, the Indians did a decent job of containing Harris. He only had 13 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown. He would run for over 100 yards in ten games last year but Plainview slowed him up enough. The leading rusher was Pilot Point’s quarterback Max Hollar, who finished with exactly 100 yards. However, the Bearcats will have a new quarterback this year after Hollar graduated. This should be a pretty good game and a chance to see one of the best players in the country for the price of a high school football ticket. Not bad.
