Central Texas has two defensive backs that made the Prep Redzone Texas Class of 2023 rankings and both of these defensive backs are athletic and smart, both able to read plays before they begin and both good at causing disruption. Check them out!
1. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="60883" first="Jamel" last="Johnson"] - Seguin High School (Seguin, TX)</strong>
Johnson has received multiple offers already from some of the top schools in the nation including but not limited to Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor and Boston College. He received first-team all-district honors last season and was named the District 5-5A-II Freshman of the Year. His most recent offers include Missouri, Michigan State, Tennessee and Utah. Getting into why he has received so many accolades, Johnson is a ball hawk by definition but even if he isn't able to get the pick, he can still disrupt the pass even in tight spots like the corner of the endzone. He is also excellent at reading plays like options and can tell where the play is going especially from the safety spot. This is a talented defensive player.
2. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="136190" first="Haeven" last="Watson"] - Veterans Memorial High School (San Antonio, TX)</strong>
Watson is another player that can read the play before it progresses and always finds himself in a spot to make the tackle. He plays the role of what a defensive back does perfectly and is a master at causing both disruption and saving his team from an opposing score. On top of his performance on the tape, he is athletic as well including his 4.58 40-yard dash time, a 4.18 shuttle, 35" vertical, 225 bench and 10.97 100-meter dash. Watson is one athletic defensive back and it will be fun to watch him play next season.
