Overview (Class 6A-D2 Preseason Ranking: #3)
2020 was a year to forget for the Booker T Washington Hornets in the first year of the Jonathan Brown era. The Hornets were stung by the injury bug early and often and could never really find that constancy needed to make a deep run in the playoffs. We have no doubt that Brown is the guy for the job and just needs some time to install his system and get the players to buy in to what he believes as a coach. That buy in shouldn’t be hard as we go back and are still blown away by the outpouring of love for Brown when he was named head coach in the spring of 2020. Despite the bumpy season in 2020, there are plenty of reasons to be excited as the Hornets focus on 2021. They return nearly 10 starters total and the offense brings back the majority of their unit with six starters. They also get a bonus return of some players that missed the majority of last year with injuries. Because of those injuries, the Hornets were able to build depth and we saw the emergence of new stars at various positions on offense and defense. Booker T Washington will have a new face at running back but they are very confident with the new man in the backfield. It will surprise nobody that the Hornets have some of the best skill players in the state. Because of that, they come in at #3 in our preseason rankings in 6A-D2. That’s pretty good but the only problem is the two teams ahead of them are in the same district. And if the rankings hold true and the Hornets finish third in their district, that means a tougher playoff road, including no games in front of the home crowd. It’s been a few years since the Hornets were raising the 6A-D2 gold and they appear reloaded and ready to make another championship run this fall.

The defensive unit for the Hornets was impressive last year and will be one of their strengths this season. Having a breakout year as a sophomore was defensive lineman

. The 2023 standout is an undersized defensive tackle that didn’t play like he was small against some of the best competition that Booker T Washington faced. We like Tiger’s game and have him ranked relatively high in the 2023 class because of his abilities at the position. The questions about his size might limit his recruitment but his play on the field has earned him a spot as one of the best at his position.

. The Hornet superstar missed nearly his entire junior season after tearing his ACL in their second game against Del City. Knee surgery would sideline Williams and he was part of the injury bug that bit the Hornets hard last season. Williams is back to 100 percent and that’s a scary thing for the rest of 6A-D2. Williams was primed for a standout season as a wide receiver and a defensive back for the Hornets. Now, it’s his last go around as a four-year starter for Booker T Washington and he’s determined to go out with a bang.

We mentioned at the top how Booker T Washington lost several stars to injuries but that actually led to the breakout seasons for new stars. Arguably the biggest breakout performer for the Hornets was 2022 defensive back

He was near the top of the interception charts last season during his breakout year and even had one game where he picked off the Hornets’ opponent four times. Now that the Hornets are back to 100 percent, the Booker T Washington secondary is arguably the best unit in the state. Honestly, saying arguably instead of definitely is kind of an insult.

. The young playmaker was one of the better breakout quarterbacks in the state. We’ve written about this 2023 class when it comes to the quarterbacks and how deep and talented they are. We’re very excited to see if Boone can match what he did last year and take the next steps as a player and a leader. Boone is a fantastic athlete but he isn’t a run first quarterback by any means. He’ll stay in the pocket and extend outside the pocket but always with the intention of making the throw.

is starting to really blow up this spring and summer as a 2023 recruit. However, the schools that are liking Tease like him on the defensive side of the ball as opposed to offense, where we’re used to seeing the dynamic playmaker. Tease had a strong sophomore season at the receiver position and is going to be one of the absolute best at his position this fall for the Hornets. However, him going to the other side and playing defensive back just gives the Hornets more depth on that side of the ball and solidifies the fact that the Hornets have a “No Fly Zone” in their secondary.

Notable
We’ve mentioned several times that the Hornets had to deal with injuries in 2020 and they’re ready to get back to normal this fall. However, 2021 will certainly not look normal to anyone who is used to seeing Booker T Washington football. And it will be absolutely critical for the Hornets to stay healthy this fall. After talking with the Hornets and their coaches this spring, we were stunned to hear that they only had 26 kids suited up for spring practice. Those numbers are drastically lower than normal. Now, some of the Hornets were missing and will be back and ready to go for fall. But still, if the Hornets are going through a problem in terms of numbers, they won’t have much slack when it comes to injuries. The depth just won’t be there. But you saw the lengthy list of “Players To Watch” and even “More Names” after that. The Hornets still have some of the absolute best players in the state and they won’t get much sympathy from other programs around the state. But that will be something to look out for this fall.
2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Aug. 27 – AT Southmoore
Sept. 3 – AT Del City
Sept. 17 – Edison
Sept. 24 – AT Choctaw
– In week four, Booker T Washington will open up district play and they won’t be easing into the district as their district opener is on the road against preseason #2 Choctaw. The Yellowjackets managed to steal one in Tulsa last year in the fourth quarter and the Hornets certainly haven’t forgotten that loss. Getting a win right here will keep the hopes of a district championship alive. The loser will more than likely not only be out of the district title race, but might have to hit the road in the playoffs.
Oct. 1 – Bartlesville
Oct. 8 – AT Sand Springs
Oct. 14 – Putnam City West
Oct. 22 – Ponca City
Oct. 29 – Muskogee
Nov. 4 – Bixby
– It has to be the most anticipated game that Booker T Washington will be playing this fall. Yes, the Choctaw game is going to be very important and rightfully so. However, the Hornets have to be haunted by the last time they were on the field with Bixby and the Spartans absolutely roasted them on national television. This regular season finale might have the district championship on the line as well in a match-up between the only two teams that have captured 6A-D2 gold.
