Coming into the 2020 season, Del City was talked about by us as having some of the more talented defensive prospects in the state. From the 2021-2023 class, the Eagles were loaded with prospects that were D1 caliber athletes. However, a freshman would emerge and not only earn playing time but become a breakout player on a defensive unit that was full of talent. And over the last few months, 2024 defensive lineman David Stone David Stone 6'4" | 270 lbs | DL Bradenton IMG Academy | 2024 State FL has established himself as the top prospect in the 2024 class.
On January 29th, Stone became the first player in Oklahoma’s 2024 class to receive an offer from a D1 program. That offer came from Memphis and then a couple power five programs followed on the same day. Iowa State and Texas Tech also offered the Del City big man on the 29th.
Stone is certainly off to a great start to his career. Over the weekend, Stone was a rare freshman that was participating in the Under Armour camp down in Dallas. Competing against some of the best offensive linemen in this part of the country, Stone was able to take away a lot from the brief camp in Arlington.
“I could always do better, but for my first camp ever, it was a good experience, the competition level was high. It’s only going to make me better.”
Stone understands already that his ceiling is high with his recruitment already taking off and having teammates that have gone through the same thing. One of Stone’s teammates, Donovan Stephens Donovan Stephens 6'1" | DB Del City | 2021 State OK , an OSU signee, has been giving advice to the young Del City phenom about what he should expect and his expectations of Stone are high as well. “He wants me to be better than him. I want to be the best to come out of Del City.”
Stone will have a new head coach this fall as Robert Jones has taken over as the new man of the Eagles. Mike Dunn left to return to his alma mater Carl Albert and Jones, who has been the defensive coordinator under Dunn is now in charge of the Del City program. As soon as the Del City job opened up, you could see current and former Del City players all voicing their support for Jones to be the next Eagle head coach. They got their wish as Jones takes over a Del City program on the rise and Stone is happy about that.
“He’s in the weight room with us every day, pushing us to get better. He makes sure we stay on the right track, keeping a level head and staying humble.”
Staying humble might be tough for most athletes who are Stone’s age that have had all the immediate success he’s had. From bursting on the scene as a freshman on a talented defense, to picking up offers, being invited to the Under Armour camp and debuting as the top overall prospect in our 2024 Rankings, that’s a lot to happen for a young man. However, Stone repeatedly talks about staying humble and being the best that he can be. There’s no doubt that he has a support system that is keeping him on track to possibly reach his goal as being the best player to come out of Del City.
“It’s different because I’m one of the first people in my family to get recruited so heavily like this. It’s a new experience and I’m just trying to stay as humble as I can.”
