The CCL has many talented players in each division as they produce college prospects year in and year out. Today we will be diving into the CCL Red Division Top Scorers, these teams include DePaul College Prep, Leo, Marian Catholic, and St. Joseph.
DePaul College Prep: Dominic Covington 22’ RB Covington is an N/S runner where he reads blocks well and sees cutback lanes to take when the defense overflows to the ballcarrier resulting in a huge gain. He can catch coming out of the backfield, once he catches the ball he plants his foot and gets upfield. Covington isn't afraid to lower his shoulder as he plays through contact, this is seen when he has the ball and when he's blocking in pass protection picking up blitzes. Leo: [player_tooltip player_id="65846" first="Jalen" last="Johnson"] 21’ RB 5’7 181 lbs Johnson is an N/S runner, he keeps his feet turning as this helps him break arm tackles and move the pile forward gaining extra yards when the defense thinks that they have stopped him. He has quick acceleration which is evident in the running and passing game by using jump cuts to evade defenders and playing through contact to gain extra yards. Rayion Davidson 22’ WR Davidson has quick acceleration which he used once he catches the ball on short/intermediate routes by planting his foot right away and getting upfield. He is a deep threat who makes contested catches by high pointing the ball. Davidson fights for the ball when he goes up to get it, he snatches it out of the defender's hands to secure the catch. Marian Catholic: [player_tooltip player_id="20239" first="Tajheem" last="Lawson"] 21’ RB 5’10 160 lbs Lawson is one of the dominant players on this Marian Catholic team, he's an N/S runner with quick acceleration and the speed to bounce plays outside to turn the corner. He is an explosive player that utilizes jump cuts to evade defenders, reads his blocks, and makes plays out of nothing. Lawson is a playmaker for this offense that causes many defensive problems for the opposing team. [player_tooltip player_id="65568" first="Justin" last="Stallworth"] 21’ WR 6’4 190 lbs Stallworth is a bigger WR who utilizes his 6'4 190 body frame well. He makes contested catches by high pointing the ball and adjusting to it last second to secure the catch downfield. Stallworth is a deep threat who has quick acceleration to get a step on his defender, once he catches the ball he fights for extra yards and he blocks downfield for his teammates as well. Ronald Thomas 21’ QB 5’10 155 lbs Thomas extends plays by escaping the pocket when it collapses and keeps his eyes downfield to find the open man. He can make level three throws, puts the ball in the receiver's basket, and can throw on the run because of his fluid release of the ball. Thomas can scramble as a last resort which is where his quick acceleration comes into play and is why he can make a play out of nothing by having the ability to extend plays. St. Joseph: Timothy Shannon Jr 21’ WR 6’3 200 lbs Shannon is a playmaker on the offensive side of the ball, once he catches the ball he plants his foot and gets upfield with his speed/quick acceleration by reading his blocks well. He makes contested catches and uses his jump cuts to make defenders miss their tackle. Shannon has the frame and skill set to play at the next level, keep an eye on this young man. Ja’Vontay Bright 21’ SB 5’9 190 lbs Bright is another offensive weapon on this St. Joseph team, he breaks arm tackles by driving his feet and has the body control to stay up after contact. He makes catches in traffic and is an N/S runner that can bounce plays outside as well as see the cutback lanes if the defense overpursues. Bright uses his quick acceleration to get by the second level of defenders and to win on the deep routes. Notables: James Eakles 22’ QB Leo Victor Cooksey 21’ WR 6’0 160 lbs
These offensive players in the CCL Red Division are stellar, some have offers to play at the next level while others are still in the recruiting process. Least to say that all of these athletes are going to play a vital role in each team's offensive scheme this season. Keep an eye out on these players as I wouldn't be surprised if you see their names in the newspapers week in and week out.
