Let’s take a look at some of the top players from the NJIC in the 2020 football season.
Frankie Savino, Emerson Boro: Savino was one of the top weapons in the passing game, completing 55 of 86 throws for 1,179 yards and 14 touchdowns to two interceptions. He threw for four touchdowns twice, and he was a threat on the ground, rushing for 519 yards on 46 carries with six touchdowns, including a 186-yard performance on 13 carries against Manchester Regional. Savino also had a sack, 29 tackles, a fumble recovery and made interceptions on defense.
Steven Faussette, Hasbrouck Heights: Faussette had a strong year for Hasbrouck Heights, throwing for 1,054 yards and 15 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He completed nearly 62 percent of his throws, and he threw for 200 yards three times on the season. Faussette was also effective on the ground with 383 rushing yards. He ran for 100 yards in both meeting with Cresskill.
Ty Scherer, Glen Rock: Scherer had a successful season as a two-way threat for 6-2 Glen Rock. The quarterback threw for 10 touchdowns and ran for 643 yards and 13 touchdowns, including four in a one-point victory over Rutherford in the season finale.
Stephano Hadoulis, Palisades Park: Hadoulis was the lone 1,000-yard rusher in the league with 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns on 131 carries. He had two standout performances – 288 yards with three rushing TDs against Bogota and 225 rushing yards and four scores against Ridgefield. Hadoulis had three receiving scores and made 62 tackles and had a fumble recovery on defense. Hadoulis also had a kickoff return for a TD in the season opener against Weehawken.
Jake Diaz Jake Diaz 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Hasbrouck Heights | 2022 NJ , Hasbrouck Heights: Diaz led the NJIC with 547 receiving yards and seven scores. He had three 100-yard receiving games, including 153 yards against Park Ridge. He also had 140 receiving yards and two TDs against Saddle Brook. Defensively, Diaz had 33.5 tackles in six games.
Tyler Reissner, Emerson Boro: Reissner made 12 catches for 439 yards and seven TDs for Emerson Boro. He was a deep threat for Savino all season. His top showing came against Palisades Park, where he caught three passes for 169 yards and two scores.
Angel Velez, Lyndhurst/Matt Shea, Hawthorne/Daniel Malinski, Pompton Lakes: Velez, Shea and Malinski each had six sacks for their respective teams this season.
Rick Rainey, Lyndhurst: Rainey led the NJIC with 90 tackles. He ran for two touchdowns, caught 23 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns and he had double-digit tackles in every game but two. Rainey finished the season with three double-digit tackle games in a row, and his season-best was 16 in the season opener at Rutherford.
Nico Hernandez-Torre, Glen Rock: Hernandez-Torre, a senior, connected on 31 of 31 PATs for Glen Rock. He led the conference in PATs made.
