For most teams, however, their seeding could be affected in a huge way, positive or negative, by the results of this week’s games. Many districts are up for grabs, and in a year like this where the playoffs have been expanded and seeding determination has changed due to COVID scheduling issues, finishing high in your district may be more important than ever. There are games not listed here that may have some smaller implications on playoffs, but these are the top few in 6A that could shake up the brackets in a big way. Some of these scenarios have a lot of moving parts and are somewhat complex, try your best to stick with me and I’ll do my best to explain everything.
Disclaimers:
- All rankings next to teams are based on their district ranking coming into this week
- Records by each team are based on district play only.
- Some districts are doing coaches polls (Coaches Rankings) for playoff seeding, others are using a modified version of the normal district standings (Modified Criteria)
Class 6A-I
District 1 (Modified Criteria)
#1 Edmond Santa Fe (5-0) vs #6 Norman (2-4)
This game is more about Santa Fe than Norman. If the Wolves win, they will likely be district champions. If they lose though, Santa Fe risks falling to number 2 in the district.
#2 Jenks (4-0) @ #4 Westmoore (3-2)
This matchup is a big one for both teams. If Westmoore can pull the upset against the Trojans, they could jump into 3rd place in the district with a loss from Broken Arrow. If Jenks wins, the Trojans will likely remain in 2nd place for the district. However, if Jenks can win and Santa Fe loses, the Trojans could be district champs.
District 2 (Coaches Rankings)
#3 Norman North (3-2) vs #5 Southmoore (3-3)
The top spot in this district is already locked up with Owasso’s dominant 9-0 season to this point, but this game still carries big implications for both teams. For Norman North, they may have to win with some style to stay at #3 in the district. Then for Southmoore, a win would likely push them to #4, but if Mustang were to be upset by Moore this week, Southmoore could finish as high as 3rd in the district with a victory in this one.
Class 6A-II
District 1 (Coaches Rankings)
#1 Stillwater (4-0) vs #3 Putnam City North (3-1)
This district may have the most complicated situation, but only if Stillwater loses. If the Pioneers win, they will be district champions. However, if PC North is able to pull the upset, there would be a 3-way tie for the district championship. Midwest City is currently 2nd in the district, with their lone district loss coming to Stillwater, and they are unlikely to lose this week as they play NW Classen. PC North’s only district loss to this point is a 21 point defeat to MWC. Who gets the nod if Stillwater falls? Most seasons there would be a clear cut answer thanks to district points, but because they have elected to have the coaches rank them, any one of the three could be voted district champs if PC North can take Stillwater down. What a nightmare.
District 2 (Coaches Rankings)
#1 Bixby (4-0) vs #3 Booker T Washington (4-1)
As I wrote that last part on District 1’s situation I realized it is almost exactly the same in district 2. If Bixby wins, they will be district champions. If Booker T Washington wins, there will be another 3-way tie for first between these two and Choctaw (assuming they can beat Bartlesville). If Booker T. wins, then it becomes a popularity contest among the coaches as Bixby beat Choctaw, Choctaw beat Booker T, and in this situation, Booker T would’ve beat Bixby. I’m glad I do not have to vote on this potential chaos.
