Every Monday, we break down the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. It’s week six and district play is in full swing. The battle for playoff seeding will heat up this week as we have playoff contenders squaring off against one another.
1) BISHOP McGUINNESS (4-1) AT CARL ALBERT (3-1)
For the second straight week, Carl Albert will be the place to be as the Titans host the game of the week. Last week didn’t go so well as they were blown out by Bixby. This week, they host 5A rival Bishop McGuinness in a rematch of three of the last four state championship games in Class 5A. The Titans won all of those title meetings. Bishop McGuinness has looked really good since a rivalry loss to Bishop Kelley in September. A big question will be how do the Titans bounce back after last week’s rout.
2) VIAN (5-0) AT CASCIA HALL (4-1)
We mentioned it in our top ten round up from week five that Cascia Hall got a huge win over Spiro but had no time to celebrate that. The Commandos now welcome in top ranked Vian, who has looked flawless this season. With the exception of a close call at John Marshall, the Wolverines have blown out their competition. Cascia certainly has some momentum and confidence after taking care of Spiro last week. If Cascia is able to pull of the upset, they will be a heavy favorite to lock up the district championship.
3) SAND SPRINGS (4-1) AT BOOKER T WASHINGTON (3-2)
Without a doubt, one of the biggest surprises so far this season has been the improvement of Sand Springs. There’s no doubt that first year head coach Bobby Klinck has had an instant impact on this Sandite program. The only loss was a close call to Bishop Kelley. For Booker T Washington, the Hornets have once again been snake bit by injuries. However, the Hornets still have some serious firepower and are one of the more talented teams in 6A-D2. This match-up has big playoff implications for both teams.
4) DEL CITY (0-3) AT MIDWEST CITY (3-1)
It’s a rivalry game and it has massive playoff implications. If you would have told us before the season that Del City would be winless coming into this week six match-up, we would have said you were crazy. However, look at the schedule the Eagles have played and you can see why the record looks the way it looks. On the other side, Midwest City has looked outstanding so far this season and they are looking to take another step towards contending for the district title. Del City needs to win to keep hopes for a home playoff game.
5) YUKON (4-1) AT EDMOND SANTA FE (3-2)
After slow starts to the season, both teams in this match-up have been on fire. Yukon has won their last four since a season-opening loss to Mustang. Edmond Santa Fe has won two games in the last week after beating rival Edmond Memorial on Monday and then blowing out Westmoore on Saturday. This is a great match-up between two teams that are playing really good football. The winner here will keep their district title hopes alive. The loser will have a tall mountain to climb just to make it into the playoffs.
6) LAWTON (3-1) AT PUTNAM CITY NORTH (4-0)
Putnam City North returns to the field on Monday night and then will play one of the top games just four days later. The Panthers play Deer Creek tonight and then host Lawton on Friday. The Panthers have gotten out to a great start to the season but they have not been tested like they’ll be tested this week with two games and Friday’s test against Lawton will be tough. The Wolverines had the last week off after losing to Midwest City in week four. Lawton certainly can’t afford to have another district loss.
7) CHOCTAW (3-2) AT BIXBY (4-0)
Choctaw will load up the busses once again as the majority of their games this year have been on the road. This will be their toughest test as they travel to Bixby to take on the two-time defending champion Spartans. Bixby is coming off an absolute beat down of 5A powerhouse Carl Albert and 6A-D2 once again looks like a two-team race. Choctaw will be attempting to play spoiler on Friday night. They already scored an upset a few weeks ago by beating Booker T Washington on the road.
8) VINITA (4-1) AT HOLLAND HALL (5-0)
In another game that will have big playoff implications, Holland Hall hosts Vinita. The Hornets come into this game as a heavy underdog after the start Holland Hall has gotten off to. The Dutch have ascended to the top spot in Class 3A and as we’re at the halfway point, the Dutch look like the team to beat in Class 3A. For Vinita, the Hornets have gotten out to a good start as well but they’ll have their work cut out for them on Friday. Their strength is to run the ball but they face a Holland Hall defense that can shut them down.
9) METRO CHRISTIAN (3-2) AT BEGGS (3-1)
Last year, Metro Christian had to rally to knock off Beggs and punch their ticket to the state championship, where they would bring home the gold ball. Fast forward to this year and it’s a massive district battle. Beggs has bounced back after a season-opening loss to Lincoln Christian. On the other side, Metro has won their last two games with two shutouts. Beggs certainly wants some revenge after losing to Metro in the semi’s but a win will put the Demons in the driver seat for the district title.
10) UNION (0-4) AT MUSTANG (3-2)
It was a big upset last year as Mustang went on the road and stunned Union. That win propelled Mustang to being the 2-seed in the playoffs and getting a home playoff game. Fast forward to this season and would it be considered an upset if Mustang pulled off the win on Friday night? Union comes in with a rare winless record. Although they’ve played a brutal schedule. The Redskins need to get into the win column and begin bouncing back from their slow start this season.
