Notre Dame Prep did a solid job of balancing the run-pass ratio, and utilized their playmakers to put up 47. Maricopa had a rough night on offense, but did show some flashes of talent. Take a look at the top 5 offensive players from the game:
Offensive MVP: Harrison Wood, WR, Notre Dame Prep (C/O 2021)
Wood had 2 TD’s and was a big playmaker for NDP. He is your do it all type receiver. On his first TD, he caught a quick out route, broke a tackle and dove to hit the pylon for a TD in front of two defenders. He ran precise routes with a good stick and break at the top of his route. He did a good job of disguising his routes by getting the corners to turn their hips quickly and cut off them, creating massive separation. Wood showed a good leaping ability with excellent ball skills as he frequently caught balls in traffic and high pointed contested throws. He would’ve had a wide open breakway TD for about 60 yards but was under thrown, and still high pointed the ball over two defenders to haul it in for a big gain. With Damien Owens Damien Owens 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Notre Dame | 2021 State AZ out, expect Wood to be the go to guy for NDP from here on out.
Tyler Schweigert Tyler Schweigert 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Notre Dame | 2021 State AZ , QB, Notre Dame Prep (C/O 2021)
Schweigert looked good Friday night, as he threw for 3 TD’s and ran for another on the ground. He did a good job of controlling the momentum downfield to consistently move the ball. He had good poise in the pocket and moved around in the pocket well. He has very good velocity and touch on his throws, and knows when to put it on a rope or air it out. He showed the ability to fit the ball in tight windows often on Friday, as he threw a dime on a seam for a 26 yard TD in between two DB’s. Schweigert did a very good job of selling play action and made good decisions on rollouts. I was impressed with his pre-snap reads, as he frequently got the ball out quick and effective.
Mister Chavis Mister Chavis 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB Maricopa | 2021 State AZ , ATH., Maricopa (C/O 2021)
Although they were shut out, Chavis led Maricopa’s only promising drive down to the NDP 1 yard line. I was very surprised they didn’t use Chavis much on offense in the first half, as he was clearly one of the best athletes on the field. As a ball carrier, he displayed good speed and very quick stutter-go movement combined with head movement that threw tacklers off balance. As a receiver, he runs crisp routes and gets out of breaks quickly. He had a very impressive catch on a bench route where he leaped over two NDP DB’s to make a catch and run for extra yards. Chavis is a legit prospect, and should definitely have the ball in his hands much more this season.
Luke Nash, RB, Notre Dame Prep (C/O 2021)
Nash was a bruiser and a workhorse for NDP that wore down the Maricopa defense. Nash took a 95 yard carry to the house when he bounced outside to the numbers, then burned down the sideline for the score in the 4th quarter. Nash had good pad level up the middle and was also able to pick up a couple first downs to keep drives alive. Nash showed very good speed in open field for a power back type, and was oftentimes one burst away from multiple big runs. He is a tough, gritty kid and will be the workhorse back throughout the season.
Gavin Smith Gavin Smith 5'10" | 190 lbs | WR Notre Dame Prep | 2022 State AZ , WR/DB, Notre Dame Prep (C/O 2022)
Smith was able to take a punt return about 45 yards to the house in the 3rd quarter to put a dagger in Maricopa’s hopes. He has good vision with solid speed, and was able to burst through a gap to score. As a receiver, Smith runs crisp routes and shows good body control. He had an impressive diving catch early in the 1st quarter on a seam where he got a good release and located the ball quickly. His role has increased along with Harrison Wood with Owens out, as he should see more opportunities going forward. He holds an offer from Arizona State, and should see his recruiting spike up soon as he continues to make plays.
