This past Sunday, September 27, I was able to attend and watch the high school athletes work out. Yet another well run event even with rain imminent. With a smaller number of campers, it was nice to see them get plenty of reps. The defensive backs ruled the evening, so it was hard for some of the other players to really standout.
2021 Cornerback LaDainian Linnear, Westinghouse College Prep
The attitude that you’re looking for out of an island corner. He wanted to be tested and Linnear was up to the challenge, really showing great ability during 1 v 1’s. Turning his head to make plays on the ball resulted in an INT, but the hip movement allows him to be able to change directions quickly. Just got an offer from Concordia, so his recruitment is picking up.
2021 Wide receiver Justin Stallworth, Marian Catholic
This young man has tons of upside due to his frame and speed. At 6’4” he uses his 4.5 fourty speed well, adjusts to balls in the air and can move after the catch. Really think he is being under-recruited, can’t teach the size and length he possesses.
2022 Quarterback Rowan Keefe, Maine South
Although the corners really shined, Keefe stood out for throwing a very good deep ball. He’s a bit on the skinny side right now, but his 6’2” frame should allow him to keep putting on some good weight. Keefe had good footwork on his throws as well.
2023 Defensive back Noah Taylor, Lemont
Love the upside here and has a very solid frame for a player so young. Wasn’t afraid to compete as he defended passes and picked one off during the 1 v 1 session. Could ultimately be a corner, could be a safety, depends how he fills out over the next few years. Either way, he’s someone to watch out for.
2022 Wide receiver Zion Horn, Marian Catholic
Defensive backs nightmare with teammate Stallworth. Pick your poison. Horn is a bit shorter at 6’2” but still an imposing figure out wide. Used his hands well and speed to beat defenders. Horn has some big time upside.
2021 Defensive back Henry Woods, Lincoln Way East
This young man has an edge to his game. That’s something you just can’t teach. Woods isn’t afraid to get in the faces of the receivers, showing good press skills. He’s a guy that would have benefited from a fall season.
2023 Defensive back Timothy Durr, Leo
Durr was another defender who was impressive, great frame with a sculpted lower half. Press coverage was what Durr excelled at, often ruining the timing between the QB and receiver.
