Now that the season is underway we will be going to games every Friday night here at Prep Redzone Oklahoma. We will also recap the games we went to the following week. So let’s take a look at how the action unfolded in Friday’s matchup between the Jaguars and Bombers.
Recap
Thanks to a hot start from star QB [player_tooltip player_id="38527" first="Dayton" last="Wolfe"], Westmoore jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in this game and looked like they might run away with it quickly. However, Midwest City stormed back in the second quarter on a couple of big plays on both sides of the ball to make it 13-7 going into halftime. In the second half, Midwest City looked like a completely new team. They were stringing together long drives on offense, creating pressure on the defensive line to disrupt Westmoore’s offense, and they didn’t allow many big plays in the second half. In total, the Bombers outscored the Jaguars 20-7 in the second half in this hard fought game. Midwest City had a few players making their first career start on Friday night and it showed early, but as the game grew on their talent and athleticism began to outshine the inexperience as Midwest City would go on to beat Westmoore 27-20 on a late 4th quarter touchdown.
Breakout Performances
Midwest City
[player_tooltip player_id="51855" first="DeAngelo" last="Irvin Jr"] - QB (Class of 2023)

DeAngelo’s big game experience from his Freshman year showed throughout this matchup and was certainly a key factor in Midwest City’s comeback. Irvin made plays all over the field Friday night. In the passing game he threw for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns and on the ground he added 60 yards and a touchdown as well. He only threw the ball 17 times but averaged nearly 12 yards per completion on the night and he delivered big at the end of the game with the go ahead touchdown when his team needed him most. He may be a bit undersized, but DeAngelo Irvin has already shown that no team or situation is going to be too big for him in 2020.

[player_tooltip player_id="38613" first="Kristawn" last="Friday"] - RB/LB

Kristawn is another starter from last year’s team and he shined on both sides of the ball Friday night. On offense, he served as Midwest City’s short yardage and redzone runningback and had a touchdown on the ground in the third quarter. On defense, Kristawn was seemingly in on every tackle that was around the line of scrimmage and had an interception in the redzone that came just before halftime to keep the Bombers in the game.

[player_tooltip player_id="38499" first="Makale" last="Smith"] - WR/CB

By now, Makale is a household name for high school football fans in Oklahoma and he did not disappoint friday night. On offense, Smith had 73 yards and a touchdown receiving, including a 29 yard reception on the last drive of the game to get the Bombers in the redzone and setup their eventual game winning score. On defense, Makale did not have a game that lights up the stat sheets, but he played like the true shutdown corner he is as he was targeted in the redzone one on one multiple times friday night but held strong and did not allow Westmoore’s offense to pick on him.

Westmoore
[player_tooltip player_id="51856" first="Ethan" last="Lawrence"] - WR (Class of 2022)

Lawrence kicked off his 2020 campaign with a stellar performance in week zero. In the first half he had two receiving touchdowns including a 58 yard explosion from runningback Brandon Arnold on a trick play. Lawrence was [player_tooltip player_id="38527" first="Dayton" last="Wolfe"]’s go to target throughout the game and finished the night with 9 catches for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns.

[player_tooltip player_id="38527" first="Dayton" last="Wolfe"] - QB

After suffering a serious knee injury last season, [player_tooltip player_id="38527" first="Dayton" last="Wolfe"] had a solid outing in his final home opener for the Jaguars. Wolfe went 26-38 with 226 yards and a touchdown passing and added a rushing touchdown as well. Though they came out on the losing side, Wolfe did all he could in the passing game as he was sacked 5 times in this game. Lookout for Wolfe and this Jaguar offense to explode once they reach their full potential on all levels.

Looking Ahead
Moving forward we believe both of these teams have a great chance at making deep playoff runs in their respective classes. For Midwest City, if they can start every game hot like they did in the second half then they will be tough to score on and opposing defenses are going to have a hard time stopping their combination of speed and power in the run game with QB [player_tooltip player_id="51855" first="DeAngelo" last="Irvin Jr"], [player_tooltip player_id="38613" first="Kristawn" last="Friday"], and junior RB Camarian Smiley. For Westmoore, the sky is the limit for this passing attack if they can minimize turnovers and sacks in crunchtime, and if they can minimize the big plays they allow, their defense could be one of the best in 6A-1.
