Week three is here for high school football teams all across the state of Oklahoma. It’s the final week of non-district play and the final opportunity for teams to lock in before the real games start counting next week. Check back every Monday for the top ten match-up’s going into the week.
1) HERITAGE HALL (2-0) AT JOHN MARSHALL (1-1)
Heritage Hall got all they wanted from a trip to Clinton last week as they were nearly upset. Now they have to shift their focus to another tough 4A team as they face former district opponent John Marshall. The Bears are coming off a close loss to Vian. That was a game that was scheduled literally 30 hours before it kicked off. Now the Bears will host Heritage Hall to finish out the non-district slate. These two teams were district opponents in the last two seasons. They are no doubt familiar with one another and have some absolute playmakers on both sides of the ball. We have a few good 4A/3A clashes but this is the best.
2) THOMAS (1-0) AT CASHION (3-0)
In most weeks, this would be the can’t miss game of the week. But this week is loaded with those can’t miss games at the top. Cashion will host Thomas in a Class A top four showdown. The #4 Terriers will visit #2 Cashion on Friday night and both teams have state championship aspirations this year. Cashion has been simply dominant to start their season but this will be arguably their toughest test before the playoffs begin in November. The same is said for Thomas. Both teams will likely cruise in district play so this could be the last big test before the playoffs roll around. This game will be huge in the Class A big picture.
3) JONES (2-0) AT LINCOLN CHRISTIAN (1-0)
This game was originally scheduled for week one but then got postponed. Lincoln Christian hasn’t played since their week zero win on the road against Beggs. Jones has taken care of business in the first couple weeks to start their season. This has become a great non-district match-up between two of the best teams in 3A and 2A every season. Lincoln has had the edge over the last few years but Jones has a team that is a serious state championship contender. We would say to expect points in this match-up but with Lincoln not playing in two weeks, it’ll be interesting to see how they look when they come out on Friday night.
4) DEL CITY (0-2) AT BISHOP McGUINNESS (1-1)
Del City isn’t your typical 0-2 team. If you’re writing them off based on their record, you’d be making a mistake. Even if they lose to McGuinness on Friday, it’d still be a mistake to write them off. This is a very good football team that has played a brutal non-district schedule. Both teams in this match-up are coming off tough rivalry losses last week. Del City fell short to Carl Albert while Bishop Kelley ran away from McGuinness in the second half. For Del City, they’re a couple plays on the goal line away from being 2-0. For McGuinness, had some of their key players been healthy, that Kelley game could have gone the other way.
5) BERRYHILL (0-0) AT CUSHING (2-0)
Week three is finally here for Berryhill and the quarantine is over! The Chiefs can finally take the field for the first time to kick off their 2020 season and we got a good one for them to start. Cushing is coming off a week where they knocked off one top five 3A team and now they’ll look to do it to another before they enter district play. Cushing has been rolling to start their season and that makes this game very interesting with Berryhill not playing a game yet this season. How will the Chiefs look compared to a Cushing team that has a few games under their belt already. Nevertheless, this is still a great 4A/3A match-up on Friday night.
6) YUKON (1-1) AT NORMAN NORTH (1-0)
For Norman North, they finally got to open their season last week and they did it in style with a blowout victory over Edmond Memorial. Yukon bounced back from a loss to Mustang by blowing out Deer Creek and putting up over 400 yards on the ground. Both of these teams came into this season as teams that you might consider “bubble teams”, meaning right on the border of being a playoff team. The winner here will take some much-needed momentum going into district play. However, the loser will still have a shot to be a playoff team as well. Both teams looked really good last week and expect to keep rolling on Friday.
7) COWETA (1-1) AT MUSKOGEE (0-2)
Muskogee is another example of a team that shouldn’t be written off based on their record. The Roughers have played a tough schedule, they’ve had some injuries to key players and when healthy, they’ll be in the hunt in 6A-D2. On the other side, Coweta bounced back after a tough rivalry loss to Wagoner by beating up on a team in Kansas. This game was originally supposed to be Coweta’s home opener. But has been moved to Muskogee. If the Roughers are getting back to full strength, watch out for them in this match-up. If not, Coweta has a shot to not only pull off the upset, but look impressive doing it.
8) METRO CHRISTIAN (1-1) AT HOLLAND HALL (2-0)
The reigning 2A state champion has had Holland Hall’s number the past two seasons but this is 2020. Metro Christian is still a very good football team but they don’t have some of those playmakers that have hurt Holland Hall in the past. And the Dutch are playing absolutely lights out football so far this season. They’ve blown out both of their opponents and will attempt to do the same to Metro as they head into district play. Holland Hall has established themselves as one of the top teams in Class 3A and a win over Metro will keep them right there. For the Patriots, they’ll need all the firepower they can get to pull off the win.
9) HOMINY (2-1) AT PAWHUSKA (2-0)
While most of the attention in Class A might be on the top five match-up between Cashion and Thomas, don’t overlook this rivalry clash. Hominy bounced back from an earlier loss with a win last week and now they turn their attention to one of the top teams in Class A. Pawhuska had week two off after winning in week zero and one. A big question mark going into this game will be how Hominy handles Pawhuska’s high powered offense. The Huskies will be one of the top offenses all season long and not many teams will be able to get that stop. However, if they want to keep this game close, the defense needs to get Pawhuska’s offense off the field.
10) NORMAN (0-0) AT MUSTANG (1-1)
Another team that hasn’t taken the field yet in 2020 is Norman. The Tigers are looking to build off a very successful 2019 season and are itching to get their 2020 season started. On the flip side, Mustang is looking to bounce back after being blown out at home against Stillwater. The Broncos are looking for some much-needed momentum as they head into a tough district. For Norman, they need to get any potential rust off before they enter a brutal district that is competitive each and every week. The biggest thing to watch for is the difference in teams with Mustang having two games under their belt, compared to Norman with none.
