Limiting the number to ten was difficult because there are some promising signal-callers in the region that had to be left off the list.
There are more than 10 quarterbacks in the San Diego Section that are capable of leading teams to great playoff runs and could potentially be playing college football on Saturdays.
Here is a look at some quarterbacks in San Diego County that can breakout this season:
Travis Bennett, Vista, Vista, 2021
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 200 pounds
GPA: 3.0
Analysis: Bennett is a lengthy quarterback with a quick release and is accurate throwing the ball down the field. His numbers don’t jump off the page because Vista runs the ball nearly 80 percent of its snaps. They run various personnel groups and Bennett runs the misdirection running game well, can throw on the run and does a good job improvising when they play breaks down. He had great chemistry with now graduated receiver Brent Lawson. All of Vista’s leading rushers from last season are graduating and it’s possible the coaching staff will ask Bennett to do more in the passing game this season. He has offers from Pacific and Juniata.
Luke Durkin, Scripps Ranch, San Diego, 2021
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 190 pounds
GPA: 4.82
Analysis: Durkin’s highlight film is very pleasant to watch. He is very smart in the classroom and as a quarterback. He senses where the pressure will come from before it comes and uses his athleticism to move outside the pocket and throw on the run. Durkin has a great touch on his deep throws and often makes the correct read in Scripps Ranch’s creative passing offense. He completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,194 yards and 20 touchdowns. Durkin had a handful of offers before committing to Davidson in June.

Charlie Mirer, Cathedral Catholic, San Diego, 2022
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 225 pounds
GPA: 3.77
Analysis: Mirer is a big guy with a huge arm. Cathedral Catholic runs an offense with a lot of motion and misdirection and Mirer excels throwing on the run in that offense and using his big arm to throw into tight spaces. He didn’t get to play a ton as a sophomore because the Dons had senior quarterback DJ Ralph and a great rushing offense. Ralph got injured in the “Holy Bowl” against St. Augustine and Mirer came in and led the Dons to victory. He is the son of former first round NFL quarterback Rick Mirer. Columbia and Colorado State have been in contact with Mirer, who is also a baseball star at Cathedral Catholic.
I’m proud of @Charlie_Mirer for leading the @Donsfootball varsity yesterday at the Battle at the Beach. Good reps! pic.twitter.com/o6ZalsWZUY

Robbie Ramos Jr., Escondido, Escondido, 2021
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 200 pounds
GPA: 4.0
Analysis: Ramos has started at Escondido as a freshman and has steadily gotten better each year. He is a dual-threat quarterback who is a great runner. His passing numbers aren’t fantastic but he does a good job in Escondido’s offense. The coaching staff does a good job accentuating Ramos’ strengths. He is most effective throwing the ball off of play action and can throw the deep ball and throw a strike on the inside giving his receiver room to make a play after the catch. Ramos threw for 17 touchdowns and ran for five as a junior last season. He has an offer from Benedictine College and should garner a few more Division II and Division III offers after his senior season.

Kiah Reid, El Camino, Oceanside, 2022
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 190 pounds
Analysis: Reid was impressive for El Camino after debuting midseason as a sophomore in 2019 and helped lead the Wildcats to a Division 2 championship. He is not very tall but he has a high release point and arch on his throws. Reid is very calm in the pocket, doesn’t have happy feet and when he does leave the pocket, he throws well on the run. Sometimes he stares down his primary target during a play, but he will improve on that with experience and at least his eyes are always down the field rather than on the pressure. He has the frame and strength of a quarterback who will play at the college level and he will only improve with more experience.
Jackson Stratton, La Jolla, La Jolla, 2022
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 205 pounds
Analysis: Stratton is a good deep ball thrower in a pro-style offense. He led La Jolla to a Division 3 championship as a sophomore and completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns. He sometimes takes unnecessary risks which lead to his 13 interceptions, but with his good receiving corps last year, also led to some big plays. Stratton and receiver Diego Solis are fun to watch work together. Stratton often hits Solis in stride and gives him room for yardage after the catch. It will be interesting to see him make better decisions as the game slows down for him and he matures. He definitely has the tools to be a Division 1 college quarterback.
