People often neglect to discuss the great football played in the San Diego Section. Fortunately, college recruiters haven’t neglected the section and have recruited players like Reggie Bush, Kenny Stills and Jamar Taylor.
There are very talented signal callers in San Diego heading into the 2020-2021 season. Here’s a look at the top five returning quarterbacks in the most southern county of the state.
1. Tyler Buchner Tyler Buchner 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Helix | 2021 State CA , Helix, La Mesa, 2021
The top pick for best quarterback in the section is a no brainer. Buchner has the measurable traits that impress college coaches and delivers on the field. He had an incredible 6,084 yards (4,474 passing, 1,610 rushing) and 81 total touchdowns as a junior at Bishop’s High School last season. Buchner now plays at Helix, the top school in the section. We don’t know yet if he will forgo his senior season to enroll early at Notre Dame or if he will play at Helix, but he is the best quarterback in the state.

2. Justus McComb, Granite Hills, El Cajon, 2021
McComb is a true dual threat quarterback. He threw for 2,691 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 494 yards and seven touchdowns. McComb has a 3.8 GPA and also plays basketball at Granite Hills and runs the 100, 200 and 400 meters on the track team. He has one offer from Eastern Kentucky and has drawn recruiting interest from Eastern Washington and San Diego.

3. Aidan Sayin, Carlsbad, Carlsbad, 2021
There is a case to be made that Carlsbad was the second best team in the San Diego Section last season and that was due in part by Sayin’s quarterback play. Sayin completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,349 yards and 24 touchdowns for the 10-2 Lancers last season. He played well against the top teams in the Section. He was excellent in a playoff win against Cathedral Catholic, completing 68 percent of his passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns and also fared well against La Costa Canyon. He has offers from Ivy League schools Cornell and Penn and recently was offered by San Diego.
4. Clash Orsborn Clash Orsborn 5'11" | 165 lbs | QB Mission Bay | 2022 CA , Mission Bay, San Diego, 2022
Orsborn is the top quarterback in the San Diego Section from the class of 2022. He led all sophomores in San Diego last season in passing yards (2,465) and passing touchdowns (24). His most impressive game came in a 44-43 loss to Patrick Henry when he completed 82 percent of his passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns. He has a 4.1 GPA and hasn’t drawn national recruiting interest yet, but will certainly garner some offers after his junior season.
Clash Orsborn, 5'10,160lbs, QB, C/O 2022, 3.9 GPA, Mission Bay High, 1st team All-City league, finished the regular season with 2,000+ yards, 22TDs, and 9ints. Helped lead the team to its 1st playoffs appearance in 4 years and a semifinal game appearance. @OrsbornClash pic.twitter.com/UvDNx5U3Vl

5. Trevor Appleman, Mater Dei Catholic, Chula Vista, 2021
Appleman didn’t put up gaudy numbers at Mater Dei Catholic, but is arguably the best college prospect on this list other than Buchner. He is 6-foot-6, moves around in the pocket and has poise. He threw for 2,109 yards with 25 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Appleman was recently offered by Lake Eerie College and will likely add some more prestigious offers after his senior year at Mater Dei Catholic.
