Arguably the most underrated receiver in the state, Zach Garmont Zach Garmont 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Verona | 2024 NJ displayed pure athleticism for Verona. Bringing in 7 touchdowns and 1327 yards to go with it, Zach’s dangerous acceleration consistently caught defenders off guard. If  defensive back’s feet stopped moving for a moment, they were in trouble because Zach would be running on by. A receiver with great hand-eye coordination as well, Zach could lay out for the ball or put his body in tough positions and still come down with it. With unreal body awareness, Zach is a true D1 talent.

We now travel up the Garden State Parkway North, to Verona in Essex County, to discuss Garmont, who is their senior wide receiver. Despite a 1-3 record Garmont has been highly productive for the Hillbillies, with 26 grabs for 514 yards and 3 scores. His 514 receiving yards are good for second in the state entering week 4. He has also contributed in the running game, defensively, and on specials. He has 11 carries for 79 yards, 9 kick returns for 183 yards, and 13 tackles to go along with one pick-6.

This Hillbilly is no slouch. Yet another week 1 thriller Garmont, who by all indications has moved from RB to WR this season, led Verona to a 3-point victory over Madison. Garmont finished the game with 8 catches for 208 yards – a 26 yards-per-catch average – while scoring 3 times.

Verona, home of the Hillbillies, have a strong tradition; however, this 5’11” 175lb receiver ain’t your typical country bumpkin. He also made 51 tackles on defense (1 TFL), 10 PBUs, and 1 Int.

Much to a defense’s dismay, Garmont has the ability to find a second gear and outrun them. When running routes, he has shown that he can stack route concepts, build upon them, and sell them for fakes. To me what makes Garmont standout as a receiver is twofold: first, he catches exclusively with his strong hands. Doing so allows him to create an actual catch radius for himself. Secondly, Garmont does a tremendous job going up above defenders for catches – particularly on under thrown passes. A subtle skill Garmont has too is that he will leverage his body to shield defender’s path to the ball. He brings a bit of physicality too when blocking for teammates and on defense. The only thing I would enjoy more about his film is if he included a robust sample of the route tree.

Although they play completely different positions, there is a common theme between Garmont and teammate Shane Costigan Shane Costigan 5'10" | 205 lbs | OL Verona | 2024 NJ . They are both fundamentally sound and play the game the right way. This is a tribute both their coach-ability and coaching they receive.
