Below are a way-to-early list of receivers who are in contention for the state’s receiver of the year. With so many to pick from, I only limited myself to select five to highlight.
Starting off today’s watchlist is a South Jersey talent that I have had the opportunity to watch first hand, live-in-action this camp season. As long as Kingsway, off to a 3-1 start, has Liles suited up and ready to go they have a chance in every game. Through four games this season, the senior is slashing 17/415/6 through the air. This includes a 7 catch, 197 yard and 3 touchdown performance to open the season and a 28-0 victory where I suspect he was pulled early. He is projected to annihilate last year’s 29/536/8 line.
Staying in South Jersey we turn our attention to Winslow. With young freshman quarterback Jalen Parker Jalen Parker 5’9″ | 160 lbs | QB Winslow Township | 2027 State NJ already identified as watchlister at his own position, his favorite target is Miller. Profiling as a safety net for his young signal caller, Miller has posted 26 catches for 516 yards and 3 scores on the season. He has hauled no less than 5 catches in any contest. Entering week 4 Miller leads the state in receiving yardage.
It is no coincidence that as Joe Lyons III Joe Lyons III 5’10” | 175 lbs | QB Atlantic City | 2024 State NJ makes quarterback of the year watchlist that Degraffenreidt, his favorite target, does too. Yet another South Jersey receiver makes the receiver of the year watchlist as he is absolutely going to crush his output as a sophomore. Last fall Degraffenreidt went 51/895/11 on the season; and this year – still just a junior – he is 19/437/7. Those 7 touchdowns currently lead the state.
We now travel up the Garden State Parkway North, to Verona in Essex County, to discuss Garmont, who is their senior wide receiver. Despite a 1-3 record Garmont has been highly productive for the Hillbillies, with 26 grabs for 514 yards and 3 scores. His 514 receiving yards are good for second in the state entering week 4. He has also contributed in the running game, defensively, and on specials. He has 11 carries for 79 yards, 9 kick returns for 183 yards, and 13 tackles to go along with one pick-6.
After traveling nearly tip-to-tip in the state, we end up at Bergen Catholic to discuss Porter, their star receiver. After breaking out in a big way for 35 receptions, 662 yards, and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore, the now-junior is busting loose again. In four games and a 3-1 record, Porter has 21 catches for 422 yards and 9 touchdowns. His best performance was a 6 catch, 183 yard, and 4 touchdown performance against Iona Prep from New York.
