Schoonover moves from the watchlist to the rankings after a strong junior season racking up 55 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks while being selected First Team All Region. 5’11” 205 lbs. he uses his athleticism to be effective from the interior DL. Explosive first step off the ball his initial quickness allows him to beat blockers to the spot and gain immediate positional leverage/penetration. Difficult to block, he disrupts plays before they can develop. Against the run, he clogs up the middle and closes gaps with his speed to shut down the interior run game before it can get going. While against the pass, he collapses the pocket forcing QB’s to get off their spot and escape before routes can establish. Shows good bend and reactionary speed to redirect to the ball carrier and make tackles working laterally. A lot to like about his game and will be a problem for opposing offenses as he adds weight to his frame.
