Tate has been an active and effective backer. He is best as an on-ball, attacking player, where he can read and react. When he plants his back foot down, he is explosive with his next few strides and does well with his long speed. He’s been a backer who is able to bring pressure and adds a unique element in the pass rush and blitz calls.
Patterson was an effective backer last year, and that experience is going to be critical this year. He showcased great instincts last year. He did well in coverage but was most comfortable as an attacking backer, where he can read and react while pressing forward. His growth this year will be something to watch, his development as an overall backer, and being good in space and covering his assignment in coverage. He is an exceptional on-ball backer with a great future, and he should top his season from last year. Would like to see him used as an EDGE rusher, as there could be something there.
Patterson climbs 40 spots and lands as 31st overall. He is an exciting backer with instincts and ball skills. Patterson is versatile and can be an on-ball or off-ball backer and he is just as comfortable rushing the quarterback as he is in space and covering zone spacing. Patterson has a bright future and should help anchor the Corner Canyon defense for the next couple of seasons.
Patterson is best as an off-ball backer, where he can use his speed in coverage and has tremendous closing speed as a rusher. He is excellent in coverage and isn’t a mismatch if asked to cover an athletic TE, nor is he a liability when asked to cover a receiver, and he is great in zone coverages. He has a great feel for the game, and the game itself never appears too fast for him. Once Patterson puts his foot down and attacks, he closes the gap quickly, and his speed is his main asset. He is physical enough to take on bigger blockers and shed them to get to the ball carrier. Patterson is tremendous on delay blitzes, and he has excellent technique as a tackler. Patterson is a fun player to watch, he is not a one-trick pony with just his speed, he will bullrush a bigger lineman and use his power to get him off-balanced and then dip under and use his speed to get by. Patterson is an all-around play maker and plays with his hair on fire.
