pleasantly surprised the Minnesota recruiting scene by committing to the powerhouse North Dakota State Bison in mid-September, seemingly out of nowhere, as he hadn’t reported an offer from NDSU previously. However, Werner did compete at one of NDSU’s prospect camps in June, and had been on campus in January on an unofficial, so the two sides were definitely familiar with each other prior to the offer and ensuing commitment. I shouldn’t have discounted the value of big-bodied interior defensive linemen, as well as Werner’s athleticism, and the fact that he held offers from Northern State, St. Thomas, Sioux Falls, Augustana, Bemidji State, Jamestown, UMD, MSU-Mankato, and Minot State means that he was a fringe D1 scholarship kid anyway, and the Prior Lake Laker has been productive in his three years of varsity 6A starting experience. Last year, as a junior, Werner posted 43 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries, and through six games of 2025 he’s tallied 22 tackles, 3 TFLs, and a sack, and the 1 game of 2025 tape displays the near-300-pounder hawk down a loose Shakopee tailback over 40 yards downfield, showcasing some rare speed and mobility for his size and position. Hope to see more tape soon! NDSU got a beast!
