While Bemidji State commit Sema’j “Speedy” Young may not have found the endzone last night, he more than made an impact catching passes. Despite being bracketed most of the evening, every time he got the ball, it felt like I could hear the Saints coaches worry. More often than not, he would break multiple tackles on any given play, and on several occasions, he was able to turn a busted play into a first down. He demands constant attention from defenses and still finds ways to create plays. He also had a crucial fumble recovery in the first quarter.

Semaj Young Semaj Young 5'8" | 155 lbs | WR Robbinsdale Cooper | 2026 State MN is a smaller receiver who had a big presence on Robbinsdale Cooper’s offense last season. Young recorded 625 yards on 39 receptions and 9 touchdowns last season, averaging 16 yards per reception. Despite playing largely in the slot, Young also saw a good chunk of reps playing as an outside receiver, finding equal success in both roles. Young showed quick speed and acceleration to gain separation on his routes easily while being slippery to tackle after the catch, allowing Young to succeed whether as a screen-option, or for sending deep on a go-route, while also showing great body-control and the ability to go up and catch in traffic. Young’s size should not make him an afterthought, he’s a scary threat for the Hawks’ offense.

They call him “Speedy”, and speedy he is! A standout performer at this summer’s Minnesota Gophers prospect camps who was a terror during 1v1s and brings some serious quickness and ability to separate to the table, Young is having a heckuva junior season and was impressive in person when I saw Robbinsdale Cooper take on Robbinsdale Armstrong early in the 2024 regular season. Young was the Hawks‘ big play weapon and scored multiple TDs, as well as an INT, in the loss to their crosstown rival, showing a lot of the same competitiveness and playmaking ability he showed this summer in Dinkytown. Through six games of action, Young posted 26 receptions for 437 yards and 7 TDs, and 537 all-purpose yards, for the 5-1 Hawks. Young demonstrates good speed that can take the top off the defense and beat man and zone coverage, impressive, game-breaking burst and can go 0-60 seemingly in a blink, and good ball skills and tracks the deep ball well too. I love his footwork and how he can drop his hips at the top of the route. Young can create some real separation throughout a route, can cut at top speed, and is quick and shifty after the catch too. Plus, he displays a good catch radius and strong hands. Yet another big-time offensive weapon out of Robbinsdale Cooper!
