Expert Analysis

Six games in, junior Derrick “RJ” Obwaya has emerged as an explosive young playmaker, racking up 672 total yards and nine touchdowns for Blaine. A standout triple jumper in track, RJ’s elite burst and acceleration immediately separate him from defenders. His first step is electric, and once he hits open space, few can catch him. He has fluid hips, balance, and an uncanny ability to redirect at full speed. Within Blaine’s RPO-heavy spread offense, RJ’s versatility forces defenses to defend the entire field. He can attack between the tackles with patience, bounce runs outside with control, and threaten vertically on swing passes or motion screens. His efficiency and explosiveness have made him the centerpiece of the Bengals’ attack. Coaches praise his maturity, quiet confidence, and steady week-to-week growth. His athletic ceiling is high, and as he continues to refine his vision and pass protection. Very interesting prospect with track speed and football instincts.

Obwaya is an all-state long jumper who could emerge as the Bengals’ bellcow during his junior season. He’s been an explosive camp performer throughout the summer, and combined with his electric JV tape, I have high hopes for what he can accomplish this fall. He’s fast, but he’s quicker than he is fast, both evident on his film and on his impressive 4.18 pro-agility time he scored at the UWRF Mega Camp. His athleticism is encouraging, and Obwaya could prove to be a legit varsity ball carrier in a couple of weeks.

A 2027 RB prospect out of Blaine that wasted no time catching my attention in River Falls was

. He had to be in the top-tier out of the 1500+ in attendance with his pro agility time, which was logged as a 4.18 right in front of my eyes and his other testing numbers show off his athletic ability as well. The 5’11 175 pounder for the Bengals, ran a 4.69 in the 40-yard dash, 9’2 in the broad jump and another 35+ inch vertical that we logged with this offensive skill group from River Falls. I surely wish I could have watched more of Derrick at the UWRF Minnesconsin MEGA Camp, but as an All-Stater on the track as well for Blaine, just know that my eyes tell me this young man should be an upcoming riser in this class.
