A safety-valve type of receiver that can go and get a ball if it’s under or overthrown, Mahr tracks passes in the air very well. An X-receiver through-and-through, Mahr is the pass-catcher that can go up and get a pass in short yardage situations, but can also be found down the field on a deep shot, trusting he’ll find a way to bring it in. Not gone to a ton on hitches, screens or slants in the middle of the field, he can take one for a big gain from time-to-time, but, if he’s used more often in the short and intermediate passing game at the next level, coaches will want to work on his quickness and sharpening up his routes.
Either way, the frame and ball-tracking ability of a player like Mahr makes him worth bringing in and developing his already well-tailored skillset. As a junior, he caught 23 passes for 379 yards and four scores.
A tall and lanky receiver, standing at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds that possesses some of the best ball skills in 2A. What more could a college coach ask for?
Along with Mahr’s big-time catch radius, he possesses soft hands and the ability to track the ball that is needed for deep shots down field. He’s clearly an X-receiver or tight end at the next level, showing off the ability to break tackles of smaller defenders and use his long strides to out-pace the defense when he gets to top speed. Getting some work in on the agility ladder and via plyometrics would help Mahr out a lot at the next level, but his physical tools and ability to go up and get a pass will be enough for him to find a spot on a Division I roster.
It’s still coming together for Mahr midway through his prep career, and it feels like a breakout might be on the way. The foundation was laid last season, when he led the Cadets in catches (19), receiving yards (154) and touchdown receptions (2). He added a two-point conversion. Mahr’s sophomore highlight video reveals a big, physical receiver with good speed. Cresco uses him on sweeps, where he runs over, around and by opponents. It will fun tracking Mahr’s development this season. It could be becoming a college prospect at that position or growing into a tight end. Either way, the future looks bright.
