Henderson made our Durham/Orange County DB Deep Dive, and he’s likely a safety at the next level, but he’s a talented offensive weapon, too. He could have made the receiver rankings, with over 900 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He has home run speed, averaging nearly 28 yards per catch and well over 10 yards per carry on a couple of dozen rushing attempts.

Henderson is one of the best athletes in the state, and here he’s our top-ranked defensive back in Durham. A versatile back-end defender, Henderson is wildly athletic, and when he hits ball carriers, they feel it. The three-year starter has 16 career takeaways, making him one of the most productive defenders in the entire state.

Henderson will show up again on this list once we get to the best defensive backs in the region, but though he’s likeliest to play defense at the next level, we wanted him to have an offensive scouting report. It also didn’t feel right to leave a guy with nearly 1000 receiving yards on just 33 receptions off the list. His speed out of the slot is a nightmare for defenders, and he attacks his breaks, putting pressure on defensive backs to be perfect. When they’re not, he creates space, and Henderson plus space usually means six points.

The true definition of an athlete, Henderson finished with over 1,200 scrimmage yards as a junior, was the state’s leading punt returner, and racked up 88 tackles, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions on defense. He scored as a rusher, receiver, kick returner, punt returner, and on an interception last year, and was uncoverable on offense. Wherever he plays in college, he should find quick success.

I was nearly ready to rank Handerson as a pure defensive back before the season. Then, he went out and averaged 27 yards a catch and 13 yards a rush for Southern Durham, to go with some of the best kick and punt return numbers in the state. He has some of the best all-around production in the state, with eight career interceptions, eight forced fumbles, and over 2,000 total yards on offense.

It feels like Henderson has been at Southern Durham for several years, and yet he’s just a rising junior, one with extremely high upside. He played mostly as a single-high free safety, but he’d often flex out to the slot against three-receiver sets and has the athletic ability to play off-man. He’s physical, probably more than you’d expect from a guy with his size-speed profile and that’s an area of his game that suggests he could probably play more in the box, or in press coverage.

is another one of those Swiss Army knife players—a matchup nightmare for defenses—and he brought that versatility to his Quality 7v7 program. With the physique of a running back or slot receiver but the skills and footwork of a lead outside receiver, Henderson is a rare talent. As one of the top athletes in the state for the class of 2027, he has the potential to be one of the nation’s premier wide receivers by his junior year. A smooth route runner with elite hands and speed, Henderson consistently commanded attention from safeties and linebackers, no matter who lined up in front of him.

Lance had an incredibly productive season on both sides of the ball for Southern Durham, and his main weapon in achieving that production is blazing speed. As a wide receiver, Lance caught 33 passes for 685 yards and 5 touchdowns – a good season if he was only a receiver. But then defensively, as a defensive back, Lance had 103 total tackles, 15 passes defensed, and 4 interceptions. Lance did a lot of his defensive work as a wide-ranging free safety who excelled in coming up in run support and tackling well in space. From a recruiting perspective, Lance has picked up offers from Troy, Georgia Tech, Appalachian State, East Carolina, North Carolina, Louisville, Florida International, NC State, and Liberty. That fire should remain hot over the next two years!

While Henderson played all over the field as a freshman, his real breakout didn’t happen until the offseason, when he started to gain some traction on the recruiting trail. On the field, though, he hasn’t quite broken through as the elite player he’s capabale of being. That should happen this season as a sophomore. His versatility is one of his best traits, but he’s best suited at defensive back, where he’ll likely play in college.

While Henderson is more of an athlete right now, his future is likely at corner, and his first offer (Georgia Tech) agrees. He plays all over the field, with snaps at receiver, running back, safety and corner, as well as extensive special teams work. He’s got the athletic profile to be a standout corner, especially if he continues to grow.
