About Kynan
Expert Analysis
Michael Keighron | Prep Redzone Scout
In 2 and a half seasons on varsity, Kynan Ulanga II played sparingly on offense as a wide receiver but excelled on defense mixing in his time as a Cornerback and Safety; racking up 100 tackles, 3 interceptions and 9 pass defensed in his career. At the CB position, he showed what it is to define the term “Shutdown Corner”, rarely allowing opposing receivers to catch the ball. Making a smooth transition to Safety, he proved to be a violent defender; always attacking the ball carrier with extreme force and playing with passion. It is that passion that is giving Ulanga the opportunity to play at Edinboro University.

Kynan Ulanga II is a nickel corner/safety at the next level and showcases some really good athleticism and the ability to make plays around the ball. A player who was really good in St. Francis’ run to the Catholic State Championship game comes back as one of their top defenders. A strong season of tape and performances I saw jump him up the rankings.

Kynan Ulanga II is one of the most fundamentally sound DBs in New York. Ulanga has some pretty impressive positionaly versatility playing Safety and CB for St. Francis. Although he lined up a ton at S, I think he projects best at CB at the next level because his best tape comes when he is lined up in the slot as a cornerback. Ulanga is solid at diagnosing quick routes and breaking to the ball in order to make a play. While he is a solid tackler, part of my CB projection is because he could be more physical with blockers and as a tackler, whereas his coverage skills are a little more developed and consistent. Ulanga has quality tape but becoming a much more physical player will help him make a jump as a more dominant DB this fall.

Kynan Ulanga II is a really solid coverage corner who plays a ton from the slot but also snaps from the box and as a safety. Ulanga has great instincts and lets his eyes read through plays when lined up at safety. In coverage, Ulanga does his best work when lined up in press-man coverage where his quickness and ability to stick with receivers in-stride make him very tough to beat. Ulanga is also very physical and willing to make tackles at all three levels of the defense. All of our defensive backs are grouped into one position but Ulanga is easily one of the top slot cornerbacks in New York.
