Western Dubuque’s Kyan Vaassen Kyan Vaassen 5'11" | 190 lbs | DB/ATH Western Dubuque | 2028 State IA is an interesting prospect with upside on offense and defense, but looks like he projects best as a DB. Vaassen was productive regardless of where he was lined up, ending his sophomore campaign with 34.5 tackles, two TFLs, 202 rushing yards, 61 receiving yards, three rushing touchdowns, and two receiving touchdowns. Overall, Kyan is a dynamic player who can provide a spark on offense, defense, or special teams, with a huge nose for the end zone. Defensively, Vaassen’s vision is one of his biggest assets, as he sees the field very well and has the range to strike from anywhere. He does a great job reading the QB’s eyes and tracking the ball in the air. On offense, Kyan’s strong and sturdy frame makes him difficult to bring down on initial contact, allowing him to shake off tackles and pick up big chunk yardage. Looking forward to seeing how Kyan continues to grow in each role for next season.

The Bobcats had Vaassen break into prep football by playing him on the sophomore team as a ninth-grader in 2024, when he ran for more than 1,000 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. While they return their leading rusher from a year ago, plenty of production was lost to graduation, opening up an opportunity for Vaassen, who’s also an asset on defense and special teams. We see evidence of these abilities watching his freshman highlight video. On it, Vaassen brings a lot of explosiveness and shows breakaway speed. His commitment to hitting the hole hard and bursting through it impresses. Power also is a part of Vaassen’s game, where he easily breaks arm tackles.
