has the kind of awareness that you really can’t teach, and it shows up all over his game. He understands where defenders are coming from, how they’re trying to attack him, and how to use his own body and leverage to make those angles work against them. He understands the timing of the trenches, knows when patience is his friend, and consistently feels one step ahead of what’s happening around him. That’s a huge reason he’s been such a productive back, including a junior season where he ran for 1,648 yards and 18 touchdowns after already posting more than 1,100 yards the year before. He’s got that low, compact running style, and the first defender almost never gets him. You’ll see defenders think they’ve got a clean shot, only for Barkus to subtly slide off the contact, roll through it, and keep the run alive. He’s tough, he runs behind his pads, and he keeps the play alive because he’s rarely off-balance. Even when things get crowded in the hole, he doesn’t look rushed or frantic. He stays patient, lets blocks develop, and then slips through just as a crease opens up. But even with all that toughness, I kept coming back to the awareness part. He just has a great natural sense for when to press the line, when to bounce it outside, when to slide off a block, when to lean through contact, and when to subtly redirect before a hit lands. Those little adjustments are what keep him upright and keep drives moving. That’s what makes his game so good. It’s not always the loudest running style in the world, but it’s incredibly effective, and there’s something really impressive about a back who makes so many hard things look routine because he understands the position that well.

has been the engine for Westwood this year, already over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground, and it’s easy to see why when you watch him play. He runs low and compact with that old-school pad level that makes him such a nightmare to bring down. The first guy almost never gets him — he keeps his legs churning, fights through contact, and turns what should be second-and-long into manageable downs. There’s real toughness to his game, but it’s not just power; he’s got a natural feel for space and timing that helps him hit holes at the perfect moment. When he breaks into the open field, he’s got enough burst to make defenses pay for lazy angles. He’s one of those backs who plays with so much rhythm and confidence that it feels like he’s in control of every snap — just a natural playmaker.

I’m going to continue to echo Barkus until he pulls in those much deserved offers. He led all 2027’s in rushing yards last season with 1,171 on a workload 193 carries with 9 TD’s. Powerful, north-south back that will run through opponents to finish runs and possesses an excellent pad level with a frequent forward drive with balance. Very impressive ball security with only 1 fumble within all of those attempts.

Barkus is going to be a big time Back after putting up nearly 1,200 yards and 9 TD’s as a sophomore at the 6A level last season, where he rushed for over 100 yards 6 times in 10 games. He sizes up with a thick, stout, and strong frame at 5’9″ 200lbs and shows a north-south running style with excellent physicality and play strength. He will run through arm tackles 10/10 times and shows a low pad level with a forward leg drive at the point of contact to punish opponents. Good ball security as well with only 1 fumble on 193 carries. Don’t estimate his speed wither, as he moves very well within his frame. A future big time break that has a big opportunity with loads of potential to put himself on the map this fall.

Even as a sophomore, Barkus made sure everyone knew his name by averaging over 100 rushing yards per game and carrying himself with the kind of poise you usually see in upperclassmen. He’s a compact, powerful runner who never seems to lose momentum, constantly driving his legs and falling forward for extra yardage. One of his biggest strengths is patience: Barkus waits for holes to develop and then bursts through with a low center of gravity that’s tough to tackle. He’s also shown he can handle a heavy workload, taking on multiple carries game after game without wearing down. His ability to slip through crowded boxes and emerge at full speed makes him a constant threat to break off big runs, and he’s only going to get stronger as he continues to mature. With his downhill running style and knack for finding seams, Barkus could be one of the premier backs in 6A before he’s done.

Barkus had a breakout sophomore season leading the 2028 class in rushing with 1,171 yards and nine touchdowns on 193 carries. He’s a powerful downhill runner with a strong compact frame at 5’9” 200 lbs. Great ability to run through defenders and shed arm tackles while maintaining forward momentum to gain yards after contact and consistently move the pile. Flashes great balance as a ball carrier both at the POA and when making his cuts. He’s quick in the short area to make lateral cuts around defenders and does a good job locating/attacking the cut back lane. Accelerates through the LOS and punishes defenders filling the lane by lowering the shoulder and driving through contact. A lot to like about his running and playing style that will land him on recruiting boards as the cycle progresses. Ranked the #3 RB and #32 overall in the 2028 state rankings.

really burst onto the scene in 2024. As just a sophomore, he managed to average 117 yards a game and was really impressive in open space. Standing at 5’9″ 200 lbs, he’s an incredibly tough runner who always seems to be running like his life depends on it. His legs never stop churning, no matter how many defenders have him wrapped up. When he gets a sliver of open space in front of him, he has the speed to go the distance and make the defense pay for it. With another two years to continue to develop, the sky’s the limit for Barkus.

is a very patient back who does a good job of waiting for the holes to develop in front of him. He’s excellent at fighting through contact and his feet never stop churning until he’s all the way on the ground. Westwood’s shifty running back regularly fires into a crowd of defenders only to somehow come out the other side at full speed. As he continues to grow, he’s only going to gain more power and be able to break more tackles. Barkas is a player college coaches should be watching closely as he develops over the next couple of years.
